What are these teeny tiny bugs in my kitchen?!

Posting in chat for traffic.
Over the last week,I've noticed an increasing number of minuscule bugs on my kitchen floor. Never anywhere else, only the kitchen floor. It started off with just a few each morning, but this morning, there must have been several dozen of them, swarming all over the mat that my cat's food bowl is on,and on the scraps of cat food itself. They are literally the size of a full stop, don't fly or jump (so definitely not fleas) but run very fast. Couldn't get a picture of them as a)they are SO tiny, and b)they move too fast to focus on! Anyone any idea what they could be? I've not (yet) found them in any of my food or in the food cupboards.

Oh,I've heard of them. I'll google and see if I can find a picture.

Flour mites??

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/04/2019 19:19

Fruit flies?

DontCallMeShitley · 26/04/2019 19:26

Dry cat food? Grain mites or weevils.

FrankiesKnuckle · 26/04/2019 19:27

Flour weevils?
Are they reddish brown?

We had some last year, bugger to get rid of but we managed it.

Thank you all for your replies.
Have Googled spider mites, but they are even smaller than spider mites, also wrong colour (these are black,or very dark brown).
Don't think they can be fruit flies as they are not flying at all, just running around on the floor.
My first thought was that they were flour mites (have seen these before as my mum had them) but there were none in the flour or other dried food packets,or in the food cupboard.
Will check out the links that are mentioned, thanks. Will report tomorrow on whether mystery has been solved.

Are they Silverfish? We have them in our kitchen.

ScreamingLadySutch · 26/04/2019 21:18

Do you have any thatch or other grass around?

I am sure they are psocids, which live off mould and fungi.

ThreeFish · 26/04/2019 21:41

Must be a type of weevil. Look in all your dried food packets and jars?

INeedNewShoes · 26/04/2019 21:46

Thrips or bird mites maybe

Squiff70 · 26/04/2019 21:53

They sound like biscuit beetles and could be living in your cat's food. If that's what they are you need to chuck the lot out I'm afraid otherwise they will infest your whole house. I am speaking from bitter experience!

ALongHardWinter · 27/04/2019 16:48

No,definitely not silverfish, too small. I had silverfish in my bathroom about 15 years ago and they don't look anything like them.

Thrips? (thunderbugs) they often appear after a heatwave.
