Have you got a link with which ones?
I used to work in one late 90’s it seemed dated then and it’s sadlu not changed much since. I have brought from Debenhams online but don’t tend to go into the store anymore.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2019 10:20

here

It’s sad but not surprising given their recent troubles.

I totally agree they're dated. But that's part of the appeal for me, when I go in its like stepping back into my teenage years. And i used to go to the cafe after swimming and later with my grandma for a coffee and a scone.
The actual stuff they sell, clothes etc is still good though imo.
I realise my tears of nostalgia are nothing compared to the people who will be out of work this time next year.

Completely! There was a recent thread on here from someone with debenhams vouchers asking what they should buy. My reply was "anything - get them spent!"

Ours isn't, so pleased as I like Debenhams and it's just been renovated here

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:26

They've spent a small fortune in a new huge one in my city, I really must go and spend my voucher...

NoBaggyPants · 26/04/2019 10:29

The Mike Ashley effect. Everything he touches turns to shit.

Last time I went in a Debenhams half the lighting wasn't working (making a grey store even more grey), and the flooring was covered in hazard tape where it was all coming apart. I felt for the staff, who understandably looked miserable.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:30

Oh ffs. Ours is on the list. Our 93000 sq ft store that been open 18 months!! If that closes there's nothing that's going to go into that space. It'll just be this huge empty monolith that's meant to help regenerate that the shopping precinct!

Nanasueathome · 26/04/2019 10:35

The Wolverhampton one is going
Not been open long at all
Very deserted when you go in though and I’m sure the members of staff outnumber the customers
A shame really as the shopping centre in Wolverhampton has nothing to entice more people to buy
The store closure will leave a big gap and I cannot see that any other store will fill it

KnitterOfSocks · 26/04/2019 10:38

My local one is going as well. I think they will struggle to relet the space as well which will be a real shame.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:38

And the council have thrown everything thry have at keeping Beaties open so I can't see them having much left to throw at Debenham iyswim.

misper · 26/04/2019 10:39

The stores are often a bit of a mess, staff often not bothered, they're always out of popular sizes
BUT
at its heart it's a great store, sells a good variety of stuff, usually good discounts. I'd love someone to put a bit of love and care into the brand cos I think it could really be turned around. Can't see that happening though Sad

Gingernaut · 26/04/2019 10:40

I don't know if you're in Wolverhampton SleepingStandingUp, but that's what's happening here.

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/04/2019 10:41

I know one on the list and it's been crap for years.

Nanasueathome · 26/04/2019 10:42

I’m surprised that the one in Walsall is not on that list

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:46

Yes I am Ginger. Hence Beaties not whatever they call it these days 😂😂

That's the thing, Walsall is dark and a bit crap. Wolverhampton is bright, airy, clean. And a massive investment!!

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:48

I do wonder if in 50 years these shopping precincts will be housing structures with a few off shops thrown in. People could literally never leave their construct for years at a time!

HoraceCope · 26/04/2019 10:49

It is very sad, but it is a dated concept I think

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2019 10:50

Flats with an attached tesco express. Yes probably. Tbh that would be good, better than it being empty for 7 or 8 years.
Mine is the stockton one. I'm going in for one last scone

Bringbackthestripes · 26/04/2019 10:50

Thanks for the link. I had been googling to see if ours was closing but couldn’t find a list.
Ours isn’t one of the 20 but it is always empty so I’m sure it will be one of the eventual 50. It has only been open 10 years. Poor staff who are all losing their jobs.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2019 10:54

Well if it was the bigger sort of Tesco style shop they literally sell everything you need - you could buy an apartment in the Mander Housing Precinct and get a basic Interior Package from Tesco Inc hard and soft furnishings. Offer residents hours of work in exchange for Tesco vouchers to spend on food and clothes.

Caucasianchalkcircles · 26/04/2019 10:54

Thank god ours isn’t shutting in Bolton. Walk through it and occasionally buy some tog24 stuff for do if they’ve a sale on. It really would be the death knell for this town centre as apart from m and s its the only dept store left and already has one of the highest empty shop levels in the country.

MoanGroan · 26/04/2019 11:02

I used to love Debenhams. Their main appeal is the customer service but recently that's gone to shite. I've been in the one near us three times and staff were rude each time. It's lost it's charm.

HoraceCope · 26/04/2019 11:04

mine has no windows, the time i went in there, the sales assistant asked me about the weather.
