Does anyone sleep with earplugs every night?

Just wondered about this. I am one of those unfortunate people who needs complete darkness and silence to sleep. The darkness is provided by blockout blinds, but the silence is sometimes harder to arrange! (Neighbours partying, birds singing at 4 am,etc!) I have recently resorted to earplugs on a few occasions - just the cheap foam ones. I find them really uncomfortable, but they do help. I am thinking of investing in some better ones.

Does anyone sleep with earplugs every night?

No, but I'm interested in this as I live on a very noisy street! But I worry because I have to wake up at a certain time in the morning and I think that I might not hear the alarm clock properly if I do, so I've never risked it. The few times I've tried earplugs in the day they have always felt very uncomfortable to me too.

Squickety · 25/04/2019 22:34

Me! Because DH snores. You're right though they do irritate and I've ended up with otitis externa (basically itchy flaky ears). I still can't sleep without them though so if my ears are playing up I usually sleep in the spare room.

Bicnod · 25/04/2019 22:35

I do Blush have done for about twenty years Shock

I also wear an eye mask most nights and get woken by the slightest movement or noise.

I am an utterly shit sleeper and the ear plugs definitely help. I use the yellow foam ones.

Rodders92 · 25/04/2019 22:36

Yes I do , find the silicone ones much more comfortable, soften them in your hand first , seem to be better at blocking the noise as well

Bicnod · 25/04/2019 22:36

Oh, and I still hear the kids before DH if they wake up, it doesn't block noise completely just dulls it...

GymKitJen · 25/04/2019 22:37

Yeah I use silicone ones, eyemask and black out linings. The house could be burgled around me and I wouldn't hear a thing

I'm like a vampire

MadSweeney · 25/04/2019 22:37

Yes. Can't sleep without them.

Annoyingly the most comfortable ones I found were a jar full of orange foam ones from cvs pharmacy in the USA last year. I'm starting to run low now and need to find a decent alternative.

I always hear the alarm. They block out background noise rather than direct sound if that makes sense.

thenightsky · 25/04/2019 22:38

I live with a snorer and I've tried pretty every earplug going. I can only wear them one night in three max as they make my ears so sore inside I need two nights to recover. Pulling them out in the morning makes me whimper with pain. It is lovely to be dead to the world and able to sleep occasionally though.

Ivy44 · 25/04/2019 22:38

I get Quies from amazon. Wax so they don’t hurt and are great for helping me sleep despite snoring partner. I have a loud (old fashioned) alarm clock on the bedside table next to my head though.

Notcontent · 25/04/2019 22:39

Glad it’s not just me that needs quiet... where do you buy the silicone ones? (I went to a large Boots and they only had the cheap foam one.)

Yes, I do. I can't sleep without them now. I like the silicone ones.

There's a website called Snorestore that specialises in earplugs & has lots of different types. I think they even do a sample set so you can try out a few types. I use ones for people with narrow ear canals, as normal ones hurt.

Soontobe60 · 25/04/2019 22:41

I buy mine online, they are Honeywell laser lite. I buy them in bulk. Can't sleep without them. I've used them for at least 15 years.

Backseatonthebus · 25/04/2019 22:41

Yes I do (thanks to DH's snoring). The best I've found in terms of comfort and reducing itchiness are Moldex small and Orhopax mini. Snore Sore do a women's sample pack so you can try lots out here: www.snorestore.co.uk/acatalog/earplugs-for-women.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI66aOoprs4QIV6BXTCh2ErgOSEAAYASACEgJKcfD_BwE

Thanks - might try the wax ones. You would think someone would invent a better solution!!

I do have some lovely expensive noise cancelling headphones but they are obviously no good for sleeping in...

Cross post with Drama there!

PickAChew · 25/04/2019 22:43

No. My insides are far too noisy when I wear earplugs.

Hecateh · 25/04/2019 22:43

The noise worries me less than light.

I sleep every night with a black out mask which I found uncomfortable at first but now I miss it if I don't put it on.

My house is pretty quiet and blocking out all sound scares me a bit - but it is something I am looking into

roisinagusniamh · 25/04/2019 22:43

Noise-x are great.

Notcontent · 25/04/2019 22:43

Wow - thank you backseatonthebus!!! So many to try...

I used to sleep with two in, but I've weaned myself to just one now Blush

SAMlady · 25/04/2019 22:51

I used to, also bought laser lite in bulk, but had to stop when DD was born. Apart from one glorious night away for work.

countdowntonap · 25/04/2019 22:51

I also use the laser lite as posted above! Have used them every night (plus afternoon naps) for at least 5 years.

RaveOn · 25/04/2019 22:54

Yes every night. I use the silicone ones. Never had a problem pre DC but I've become a really light sleeper since.

I've found silicone ones most comfortable but my hair gets stuck to them which is annoying Angry
