Does anyone sleep with earplugs every night?

Just wondered about this. I am one of those unfortunate people who needs complete darkness and silence to sleep. The darkness is provided by blockout blinds, but the silence is sometimes harder to arrange! (Neighbours partying, birds singing at 4 am,etc!) I have recently resorted to earplugs on a few occasions - just the cheap foam ones. I find them really uncomfortable, but they do help. I am thinking of investing in some better ones.

I use Macks silicone every night for DP's horrendous snoring. I still wake when kids come in for a drink / nightmares etc and there are nights when the snoring is so bad that even the ear plugs don't work - but, it makes it tolerable! When I get the luxury of sleeping alone, I still wear them as I love the total silence to fall to sleep to.

I've used these for years. Love they if one comes loose in the night, it's attached & I don't have to look hard to find it

Yes I do now. I have the cheap ones and I cut them to size so they don't stick out.

Cheerybigbottom · 25/04/2019 23:03

I wear them every night due to DH's snoring, have done for about 6 years. I buy a box of 200 pairs off amazon for about thirty quid. 32db reducing minimum.

Honestly I still hear him but it's much easier to live with. Still hear DS getting up and alarm and stuff but the honking snoring and even just his heavy breathing is reduced to acceptable levels. Smile

I sleep with Bioears in every night. It has literally changed my life as I am such a light sleeper. The only problem is that I am now completely dependent on them so if we go away for the night I have to make sure I’ve got some with me otherwise it’s a sleepless night!

Ifonlyiweretaller · 25/04/2019 23:18

I actuallly had some made to fit my ears as I cannot stand my OH snoring and all the disposable ones hurt my ears.the first pair lasted me around 4 years, and I'm now on my second pair ( was re-measured for them as apparently your ear canals alter with age ). Not cheap at around £100 a pair, but spread over the time I've used them they're pretty good value!

Sarcelle · 25/04/2019 23:20

Yes, for last 20 years. 3m ones. No ear problems. DH snores so have to use.

icannotremember · 25/04/2019 23:25

Pre dc I did for about a year, I got addicted to them when DH brought some incredible ones home from a very noisy industrial environment he was working in. They were yellow foam ones on a blue plastic string, with them in all I could hear was my own heartbeat and I'd fall asleep so easily compared to normal... Not safe to use with a baby to care for though so I stopped using them. I don't even know where I'd get the same ones now.

GiantKitten · 25/04/2019 23:27

Used to use Boots wax ones but they compacted my earwax terribly & I went pretty deaf for a while.

Now I just have a fan on all year round - it doesn't shut out noise, but it does mean things like gates banging & dogs barking & random voices don't intrude. (NB DH sleeps elsewhere because his snoring is impossible to share a room with)

It's a small tower fan like this & it goes everywhere with me now - fits in a cabin-sized suitcase, it's great. I keep it on a small table pointing up the bed, to relieve middle of the night hotnesses, but it could just as easily sit on the floor aimed at the wall.

feebeedeebeedoo · 25/04/2019 23:38

I used to use the wax ear plugs from Boots as the ex snored like a freight train. But then I kicked his sorry arse out and now I don't need them Grin

Cupcake4u · 25/04/2019 23:38

I slept with earplugs every night for 7 years , due to a noisy family and then snoring husband .... I found it ok but sometimes uncomfy ( I used the foam ones )
I no longer wear them as I'm not sleepi g next to husband anymore and thought why should I spend the rest of my life wearing earplugs , but if had a weekend away or hospital stay I'll take some .

Im also someone who can't sleep with any noise or light

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/04/2019 23:42

I think I should
Or I might need a good solicitor when I kill my husband

RagingWhoreBag · 25/04/2019 23:45

I wear them when my DP stays over (3/4 nights a week) as he’s a terrible snorer. They’re amazing! I can sleep through the kids coming in and out to use my shower (they’re teenagers but the only shower is in my en suite) and him getting up for work. When he’s not here I don’t need them but I definitely don’t sleep as soundly without them.

I use the pink and yellow ones (Howard Leight or something from Amazon)

MaryMashedThem · 25/04/2019 23:47

Another vote here for the Howard Leight ones bought in bulk off Amazon. I've worn them every night for the past decade or so to block out DH's snoring (and he does the same to block out mine Blush)

grincheux · 25/04/2019 23:51

Me! DP snores. I use soft foamy ones but admittedly get sore ears some nights, like when I used to have ear infections as a child.

JeezOhGeeWhizz · 25/04/2019 23:54

I do. Can't sleep without them.

granadagirl · 26/04/2019 00:00

Ladies, do you find that the earplugs are not flush with you ear when you’ve inserted them. Ie some is still sticking out?

grincheux · 26/04/2019 00:09

Yes @granadagirl, a bit sticks out but they don't often fall out in the night.

Nat6999 · 26/04/2019 00:38

I do, I use the cheap orange foam ones from the DIY aisle in Poundland. I am autistic & can hear silly things like electricity humming & it drives me mad.

HeronLanyon · 26/04/2019 00:43

I use silicone ones. The foam ones really hurt my ears. I did cut them down (must have small ears) which worked a bit.
I also find some masking noise helpful ( as alternative to silence) and use white noise machine on low or podcasts through ear bud (side sleeper) ear bud itself even if not listening to anything dampens noise for me quite a bit.
My black out blinds have recently been improved for summers by lined blackout curtains which work brilliantly.

thenightsky · 26/04/2019 10:27

@granadagirl

No they should not be sticking out - the should be flush with your ear. That was my mistake when I started using them, then I saw this video and I find them much more user friendly now.

JudyDenchsBloomers · 26/04/2019 10:57

I always sleep with them in, another shit sleeper.

I bought 200 pairs of these Moldex earplugs from Amazon - they had the highest decibel blocking I could find. They're foam and super comfy.

Jjou · 26/04/2019 11:30

I can't sleep with the foam earplugs in, but the silicone putty ones work really well. I've just bought some from Boots, but the ones from Snorestore are the best. The only problem is they make my ear wet inside which is really gross, but they block out DH's terrible snoring, so swings and roundabouts.

blondiehip · 26/04/2019 11:33

I do! But I have dermititis in my ear now. I don't care though as I can treat it and would rather sleep. My question is though... Does anyone sleep with ear plugs and have young children?

RosaWaiting · 26/04/2019 11:34

yes, I use the wax ones

in summer, my area is so horrendously noisy, if I have to keep the window open, I use the ones with metal inserts and rubber wraps - Isolate I think they are called? I will say they are possibly dangerous and they can be painful to sleep on but sometimes it's just desperation. I have insomnia anyway.

it's all a nightmare.
