Stupid question but if you're buying a new car: Who arranges the tax?

Does the dealership arrange it? Or does the owner have to arrange the vehicle tax?

As I understand it, dealers can arrange it but are not obligated to, so you would need to check with them.

The dealership did mine. I think there was an admin charge though IIRC.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/04/2019 16:07

The new owner has to do that. When we got our car, the garage let us use their PC to buy it online before we left.

Nottobesoldseparately · 25/04/2019 16:10

The dealership did mine, just added it to the rest of the admin of registering it and arranging my personal plate to go on it.

They sorted it for my previous car too, however that was a zero charge!

Laffinalltheway · 25/04/2019 16:10

Definitely the new owner as tax is now not transferable. If you were to sell the car then the purchaser must tax the car before driving it away.

Haha, 3 posts, 3 different answers. I just googled and I'm correct. They can or you can.

Thank you all.

If its brand spanking new, they have to do it at the same time as registering it into your name on an online system.

GottenGottenGotten - I believe that info is outdated as it still refers to tax discs.
The current rule is the new owner must tax the vehicle in their name prior to driving on the highway. If the dealer wants to use their bank card to pay for it, that is ok, but it must be newly taxed in the new owners name.

Dealers can tax the car. They don't have to. I'm not sure why you are disagreeing with me as you go on to agree with that! That article was actually published in February of this year, but they probably updated it without correcting references to tax discs.
