Hmm?

Just curious. What do you make of this pubs name?

I think it refers to their hair colour doesn't it?
Not that there are any "Yellow Boy" or "Red Boy" pubs I've come across.

My children used to refer to people by the colour of their t-shirt/top. It was very confusing at first "That black man" me: BLANK Confused and a little nervous.
"Next to that blue man!"
Me: Ah...

RuffleCrow · 26/04/2019 11:01

Do those who have a problem with it also have a problem with referring to black people in real life, i wonder?

BastianBux · 26/04/2019 11:04

Have a "Black Boy Lane" near me.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/04/2019 11:04

The Swan and the Peado

So what's that all about then? Google doesn't seem to come up with an explanation of the origin of that one.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/04/2019 12:07

Deecee- bit aggressive confused. Lots of equally unnecessary language and tone knocking about and yours is really no better

bacon don't tone police me re my response to un-necessary comments about black girls - you did notice this thread isn't about black girls, didn't you?

& the old 'aggressive black woman trope' is played out, you can't even be original.

No whitesplaining requested or required from you.

notacooldad · 26/04/2019 12:09

Wasn't it a sketch from the Peep show?

Megan2018 · 26/04/2019 12:14

There is one by us too (The Black Boy Inn). It's an old pub name, that's it. It's not offensive.

Downthecanal · 26/04/2019 12:17

🙄🙄🙄

TheBulb · 26/04/2019 12:20

If it was as racist as you think it is it would have been long gone by now.

Absolutely, because we live in a world free of racism. Hmm

There's a Black Boy Inn in a village near mine, and the brewery wanted to change the name at some point several years ago to the Village Name Inn, but there was a massive local objection among the white, 60-something, Tory Brexiteer locals, who decried it as 'PC nonsense' and signed a petition saying they would boycott it if the name were changed.

The sign used to be a grinning, red-lipped black man who looked like the bastard offspring of the Black and White Minstrels and anti-abolition cartoons. Now it's a sweep, but the old sign is on the wall inside the bar.

And people wonder that people from BAME backgrounds don't venture out to the countryside from the extremely diverse city only a few miles away. Hmm

Downthecanal · 26/04/2019 12:25

The Hung Drawn and Quartered - this pub is offensive to Brave heart aka William Wallis. His family must be in bits

Fanny on the Hill just offensive to a feminist like me!

Dirty Dicks well anyone that that has a penis would surely be upset over this so I’ll be professionally offended for them!

FoxSquadKitten · 26/04/2019 13:49

You knew everyone who signed the petition, their age, their political persuasion and their views on the EU? Ok then 😒

DeeCeeCherry · 26/04/2019 14:24

How come you didn't highlight this in your response to bulb @ Fox? Instead of making an entirely meaningless point

You knew everyone who signed the petition, their age, their political persuasion and their views on the EU? Ok then

^ Not exactly discerning/a good deflection.

I don't care about the pub names, I expect defence of foolishness here. But inanely attempting to blindside people who know what racism is or are at least adble to discuss it sensibly, is a tedious MN sport nowadays.

WW asks 'Is this racist'

Bunch of WW say 'No' then swiftly progress to dumb examples, & piss taking.

Any BW or enlightened WW who thinks hmm may be racist, or takes issue with the piss taking, is a professionally offended snowflake.

So basic.

FoxSquadKitten · 26/04/2019 14:48

I think we all know what racism is, thanks Deecee and will discuss it willingly, but calling out the name of a pub because it is called 'the black boy' (shock, horror 😱) is just detracting from the real issues of racism.
People have to take offence at every bloody thing and it doesn't help anyone.

whingeygingy · 26/04/2019 14:50

Yes pub is in weeley

DotOnTheHorizon · 26/04/2019 14:57

@OnlineAlienator indeed there is one in Retford (have never been in - it was a spit and sawdust pub with a spittoon when I used to go out and my mother would not allow me to set foot in the place)

The sign is awful - but for some reason it persists. I won't link as I think it is a highly offensive sign.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/04/2019 22:17

Fox I should think you do know what racism is to just a small extent, just that you don't care about it hence trying to deflect and score points.

I already said I don't take offence at pub name but as to the rest - yeah I'm offended when comments are made about black women and so what? Post is nothing to do with BW but someone just has to make, or defend comments like that.

Or maybe some think Boy spells Girl🙄

Whitesplaining Whinging talking about others being offended can never see itself

FoxSquadKitten · 26/04/2019 22:32

What are you on? Trying to deflect and score points? Yeah ok 😒
And What comments about black women? Are you referring to the joke that @FiremanKing made earlier? How can you be offended by that? Jesus, lighten up, you've already had one post deleted, for being bloody rude 🙄

OnlineAlienator · 27/04/2019 02:45

Yes Dot i googled and reminded myself of the sign and its as bad as i remember! I dont want to whitesplain anything but i cant imagine being flattered by this if i was black? Confused

SquatBetty · 27/04/2019 07:07

I see the Black Boy in Shinfield just outside Reading's been mentioned a couple of times. Yes its name apparently dates from Charles II reign. But I can recall the pub sign from the 70s and also a little statue of a black boy wearing a grass skirt and head dress up on the roof.... maybe the owners at the time got confused about the name!

Saisong · 27/04/2019 07:21

The one in Caernarfon does not go by Black Buoy! If you look at their website there is no doubt what the Bachgen Du is referring to.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 27/04/2019 08:01

The village of Blackboys and all the related buildings near Uckfield relate to the charcoal making industry that was based around there.
I don’t think white people get to decide what is perceived as racist, but I also don’t agree with history being distorted due to lack of information and understanding.

ClashCityRocker · 27/04/2019 08:01

What are the origins of the Turks Head then? That doesn't seem too pleasant a name, really.

DeeCeeCherry · 27/04/2019 08:22

Foxsquad what Fireman king said wasn't a joke to me - you don't get to decide what's rude.

I had a comment deleted? Hadn't noticed that but it's MN so racist jokes allowed, responses that aren't quite naice enough are deleted. It's nothing new, don't get excited that it vindicates you with your silly 'what are you on' road talk

You don't get to decide what is racist not how racism should be responded to.

Whatever you're on - get off it

'

keiratwiceknightly · 27/04/2019 08:29

There are two in my v small town. It's a ref to Charles II Who had a dark complexion; this was a royalist area at the time and both pubs go back to that time.

Not racist.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 27/04/2019 08:54

Turks Head usually dates back to the time of the crusades, likewise Saracens Head. Two warring, militant faiths fighting for territory.
