@Benes - mine definitely has amazing views!

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 25/04/2019 21:06

Why, OP? Do you find it offensive? 🙄

EdithWeston · 25/04/2019 21:26

I know this one

There's a pub in Putney called The Arab Boy

"Built in 1849, this pub was bequeathed by its builder, Henry Scarth, to Yussef Sirric, the Arab servant he had brought back from Turkey"

TitianaTitsling · 25/04/2019 21:32

iwould are you doubting Super Hans?!

starzig · 25/04/2019 21:33

Reminds me of miners

@bellinisurge we've got Black Boy near us that went through a period of being called the Black Buoy then reverted. It's a canal pub so kind of made sense!

Hiphopopotamus · 25/04/2019 21:41

Damn I came on to say it could be ‘The Swan and the Peado’ - I missed getting in there first with that by a long shot!

BackforGood · 25/04/2019 21:45

Why do you ask OP ?
Trying to stir up an issue where there is none?
It is a really common pub name, for all sorts of reasons listed above.

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 25/04/2019 21:47

The one in Swansea is a reference to it being in an ex mining area. The picture on the sign is clearly of a miner...

Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/04/2019 21:57

@HelloJackieYouLookNice that was my local :)

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/04/2019 23:03

Deecee- bit aggressive Confused. Lots of equally unnecessary language and tone knocking about and yours is really no better.

I assume you don't approve of it OP? There are a number of heritage sayings and names that are no longer particularly appropriate; I'd say this is an example of that. We had a pub of the same name a few miles down the road from here and it changed the 'black' portion to a different colour a few years ago, but I've seen several with the name intact.

I assume changing the name of ones heritage business is potentially a risk to custom (Google search hits etc) as well as expensive to change signage or any paint colours in an industry that is already known to often struggle with semi rural pubs often closing as it is so for that I couldnt judge the proprietors in any specific way. Not something I'd be happy to see at all though, it is unnecessary.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 25/04/2019 23:06

Huh. I’d totally forgotten there was one in the small village I grew up in.

stellarparallax · 25/04/2019 23:25

I think that before deciding it’s completely inoffensive and anyone saying otherwise is being a snowflake, it would be worth sounding out how non-white people in the area feel about it. Words and phrases do change their meanings over time, and the fact that the pub was originally called that after miners/KC2 doesn’t necessarily mean a name change would be a bad thing. If people want to retain the link with the past, why not call it "The Miner" or "The Charles II"?

UCOforAC12 · 25/04/2019 23:31

I knew it was going to be that.

If it was as racist as you think it is it would have been long gone by now.

Lovely one in Shinfield.

RomanyQueen1 · 25/04/2019 23:33

The Black patch in Birmingham is the same, it refers to the coal industry.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/04/2019 23:47

I've never seen a pub with this name and like PPs I thought it sounded like a horse.

I've enjoyed reading this thread though, it's fascinating. I love learning about the history of things. I have learnt so much stuff from MN!

BackforGood · 25/04/2019 23:48

.... and don't forget we have the black country here in the Midlands too.

HowardSpring · 26/04/2019 00:30

I knew before I opened the thread it would be that. A classic old name for a pub.

powershowerforanhour · 26/04/2019 00:47

I thought Swan and Paedo too :-)

Does the Turk's Head in Dublin still exist? I had some great nights out there 20 years ago.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 26/04/2019 10:47

I see the greivence archeology industry is still going strong

LordoftheRinse · 26/04/2019 10:49

There’s a pub named this by where I grew up, the picture on the pub was of a miner boy.

RuffleCrow · 26/04/2019 10:51

There's one near me too. Don't see it as a problem - some boys are black, kings have arms, swans are white etc. Unless accompanied by an offensive painting I can't see the issue.

stellarparallax · 26/04/2019 10:57

Out of interest, are any of the posters saying it’s fine non-white?
