Hmm?

Just curious. What do you make of this pubs name?

Im outraged, offended and downright snowflaked at this appalling name and will immediately form a naked protest march demanding that they change the name to, ‘The Black Girl.’

insancerre · 25/04/2019 14:53

There’s a black boy lane in Tyne and Wear, in fencehouses, no doubt named after the miners as it was a big mining area

Spidey66 · 25/04/2019 14:58

There’s a Black Boy Lane in Tottenham and the pub there used to be called the Black Boy though now it’s called BBs. I think there’s a historical reason for it. Ironically despite the diverse area it’s in, afaik it’s rarely comm muted on.

SouthernComforts · 25/04/2019 14:59

There's a pub near me called The Black Ladd.

bloodywhitecat · 25/04/2019 15:00

There's one in Bury St Edmunds, the sign depicted a young child chimney sweep.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2019 15:02

My first thought was a racehorse.

frenchonion · 25/04/2019 15:05

If its the one in sketty, its a miners thing. I hadn't even thought of it's other possible connotations tbh, it very clearly has nothing to do with references to race if that's what you're getting at. Save outrage for something more worthy I think!

Reddedder · 25/04/2019 15:05

I live near Black Boy lane in Tyne and Wear. Never thought it was offensive as it’s obviously about miners

ReSistingPink · 25/04/2019 15:23

I think context is everything. And as many others have pointed out it's a perfectly apt name in the context of mining or Charles II.

Let us never tolerate racism but let's be cautious with our outrage. There's enough legit stuff to be pissed off about.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 15:25

There's one in Caernarfon which they have tried to neutralise by calling it the Black Buoy. Not sure I am fooled.

Macandcheese05 · 25/04/2019 16:23

a horse springs to mind for me.

whingeygingy · 25/04/2019 16:31

One near me has picture of Charles 11

notacooldad · 25/04/2019 16:38

I think context is everything
I absolutely agree with you.
I wouldn't have thought of any racist connotations to be honest but it would have got my curiosity and I would have found out the history of the name for my own interest.

Spidey66 · 25/04/2019 16:39

Btw I think the Tottenham one is something to do with King Charles. It rings a bell. There have never been coal mines in Tottenham afaik.

CostanzaG · 25/04/2019 16:43

We have a pub called something similar near us but it's in reference to a dog.

Not offensive in the slightest.

thebeatofthedrum · 25/04/2019 16:48

There's a Blackboys in East Sussex, near Uckfield - Blackboys Vineyard; Blackboys Primary School; Blackboys Pre-School; Blackboys Inn; Blackboys Service Station; Blackboys Cricket Club...

BabyMoonPie · 25/04/2019 16:49

@SouthernComforts - me too. The name relates to a horse and mine serves very tasty cheese and onion pie!

Benes · 25/04/2019 16:53

babymoonpie and southerncomforts I think we must all live near each other. Amazing views too!

Bezalelle · 25/04/2019 17:30

There's one in "Friday Night Dinner"!

Jim: The pub.... Pubs...

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/04/2019 17:53

There's one near where I live.
A few years ago it had a sign with a chimney sweep on it. Now it has a sign with a black horse on it.
The nearby multi laned roundabout has been named after the pub.

Spinnaret · 25/04/2019 18:02

There is one near my parents in Hurley. Same history as someone else has said, named after Charles II.

FirstDateHelpForOldie · 25/04/2019 18:06

OP have you been watching four in a bed?
A pub was on called this and the owners were horrible

longwayoff · 25/04/2019 18:10

We have one here. It's a great pub and we love it.

Singlenotsingle · 25/04/2019 18:25

Is that the one in Weeley? It was after a king - Charles 1st or 2nd.
