My DD has a kindle fire. It does the job cheaply enough and easy to set up parent controls etc

Kindle fire if you really want a tablet, but we swapped to second hand iPhone 5s for £50 off eBay pretty quickly. No sim.

Just the cheapest, they have a slot for SD.
