What sort of hernia ? I have multiple health conditions and I manage to get insurance just fine , just make sure you put everything down .

Totally depends what sort of hernia. Many people live totally normal lives with hernias!

It’s an ingujnal hernia but not at risk of strangulation ( can still push back. Had the shittiest 6 months and booked a month in the US. Need to pay final amount etc soonish but want to be sure he’ll be ok for insurance. Has had a scan and waiting for a consultant appointment. Wondering if we should pay for a private consultation so we know all the details before getting insurance. How much would that be and how much would insurance be for an otherwise fit 50 year old?

You should buy insurance when you book! Especially for US.
Now you will have to declare it as a pre-existing condition. Having said that it's usually heart conditions and cancer that really bump up the premiums. Try Holiday Extras they do policies for existing health conditions.

We’d have had to declare it before travel anyway. How much more do you pay when you have pre existing conditions?

Yes but you would have been covered if you need to cancel.
I have loads of pre existing conditions but can still get insurance for under £100. Europe though.
Just type details into the website I suggested earlier.
