Is Lucerne worth the drive,is it a nice drive?
Is there anywhere else like that near Basel.

Drive to the Bernese Oberland and get the cable car up to the top of the Stockhorn. It's stunning.

The Swiss motorway is not terribly interesting. Lucerne itself is quite pleasant to stroll around, take a boat trip , maybe a trip up Rigi, Pilatus or go a bit further to Engelberg and the Titlis glacier. Basel itself has some interesting museums and the Rhine falls is impressive and a short drive away. There is also a small Roman site nearby. Zurich is nearer by road than Lucerne, but again not a very interesting drive.

Engelberg is one of our go-to places . Last time we visited we went on the recently opened walkway over the abyss at the top. The view is spectacular from the top and the journey up is an adventure in itself but do allow time for queuing as popular with tourist groups. It is about 40 minutes drive further than Lucerne along a valley but easily accessible. Zurich is a larger city but interesting to walk around, has trams, zoo, viewpoints , boat rides etc. Lucerne a more compact city centre but you can get round trip tickets for boat/cablecars/mountain train to Pilatus and Rigi. Bern is also lovely and has more historic buildings.

The Rhine falls are great.
If you want things closer by Rötteln castle killed a few hours (random stop on our way back to Basel from Freiburg)
I enjoyed the paper mill museum and the Tinguely water sculptures in Basel itself.

Basel is a beautiful city, so a day there could be well spent. I would also recommend hopping across the border to the stunning German town of Freiburg.

Thanks, one full day and night in Basel and the next day touring. But nothing to strenuous. .
See the roads good Basel to Lucerne and up the Englebert? IE not treacherous... no barriers, long drops Etc

Also I can't see prices for Engelbert.

www.titlis.ch/en?c=1 will have prices etc. The drive is not particularly steep, as the resort itself is relatively low . The road passes through through pastures following a river valley but rises a little above towards the end but no nasty drops. There is a small cheese making monastery with coffee shop if you have time.
