Why are my boobs growing at the age of 43?

I’ve always been small breasted, 32a unless pregnant or breastfeeding. I had to buy new bras in December, went into a b cup, my boobs are now overflowing so will be going to get remeasured this week. I haven’t gained weight and I don’t use any hormonal contraception.
It almost feels like I’m going through puberty again, boobs feel swollen and very tender, when I take my bra off the initial ache is quite uncomfortable and my nipples are very tender. I am most definitely not pregnant.
Has this happened to anybody else, is it the beginning of peri menopause?
Also I’m not complaining, it’s lovely finally having breasts after 30 years of having fried eggs Grin

I’d go to your GP
Probably nothing but it’s a fairly significant unusual change worth asking about

I'm 44, definitely not pg (got the snip years ago) and get swollen, sore boobs. Could be peri-menopause - have a think about whether you might be getting any other symptoms and dismissing them as something else?

Peri menopause? My boobs got bigger from then on. Used to be 34B am now 38DD

DesperadoDan · 23/04/2019 21:33

Thank you for your replies, it’s good to know it’s happened to other women around my age!
I first noticed it before Christmas, boobs usually swell half a cup size 7-10 days before my period and shrink back to normal during my period, except they didn’t at the end of last year and have been growing very slowly since.
I am definitely not pregnant, split with ex not so long ago but have had a period since also no other physical symptoms of pregnancy. I started antidepressants just under a month ago.
I have noticed my PMT is slightly worse, the day before my period it feels like the world is about to end but my mood lifts within a couple of days. Hot flushes at night leading up to my period but no other symptoms otherwise.
I’m not especially worried as it sounds like it could be the start of peri menopause, I just wondered if it had happened to anybody else.
I will book an appointment with my GP and see what she says.
In the meantime I’m going to buy myself some fancy new bras!

I'm 42 and this is happening to me too. In the last year I've gone from an A cup to a C cup. No weight gain but have noticed early perimenopause symptoms so have put it down to that.

SlappingJoffrey · 23/04/2019 22:20

I'd probably take a pregnancy test just in case. Women do still get bleeds in pregnancy sometimes.

73kittycat73 · 23/04/2019 22:43

Hi, just wanted to post that I was once put on an antidepressant and within a month I had gone up a cup size without putting on weight (Sorry, was so long ago can't remember what they were called.). I mentioned it to the DR and she said it was probably coincided with a hormone imbalance.

DesperadoDan · 24/04/2019 10:36

Thanks for replies, I’m thinking it’s peri menopause, joy oh joyGrin Have booked myself a GP appointment, non emergency so it’s in 2 weeks time. They started growing before I took antidepressants, I’m taking old skool Seroxat so I am expecting to gain a little weight soon which wouldn’t be a bad thing.
I will pick up a pregnancy test on the way home from work although I’m pretty sure I’m not.

They do get bigger during menopause. You can hoist them up and use them to barge people out of the way 😂

Romax · 24/04/2019 12:46

You’ve gone from “most definitely certain not pregnant”

To “pretty sure”

Worth getting the pregnancy test based on your swollen tender breasts!

DesperadoDan · 24/04/2019 21:24

@ ineedaknittedhat Grin I’ve brought a couple of what my DF calls over the shoulder boulder holders today. I am indeed a c cup now and I am not pregnant, I have done 2 tests, both negative, I didn’t think I was, it hadn’t crossed my mind until a pp mentioned it.
@ Romax I’m one of those people who who have doubt very easily planted in their minds! Grin
Will see what the GP says in a couple of weeks. They are incredibly tender and uncomfortable tonight, period is due in around 9 days, hopefully it will ease a little then.

Pre menopause I was 34d, now I'm 38d.
I've not been to the doc about it, just put it down to Meno. I've also put almost 2 stone on in the last 2 yrs. Joy of joys!

DesperadoDan · 24/04/2019 21:35

@ HaventGotAllDay can I ask you how old you were when menopause started?
I have done a little research and it said breast tenderness as a symptom not growth, it very reassuring to know it’s happened to other women. I’ve spent 30 years as flat as a pancake, I haven’t been worrying as such just wondering why?

About 46-47 I think.
I'm 53 now and well out the other side lol. Most of my same age friends have put weight on like me. I suppose the boob growth is just a different kind of weight!

RockinHippy · 25/04/2019 10:23

Yes, this happens. I went from DD to FF in a short space of time & I'm still F post menopause. My hair also suddenly went very curly too 😐

LordoftheRinse · 25/04/2019 10:30

All the women in my family get bigger boobs after the menopause, and they all have the menopause or peri menopause very early on.

user1497863568 · 25/04/2019 10:33

It's probably the antidepressants.
