HCG Levels

Hi all, I’m new to mumsnet & could really do with some support. Myself & my husband have been trying via ivf for the last 3 yrs. we started off with one private clinic where we felt like every time we had appointment it was like taking one step forward to b knocked back 10, so we changed to clinic closer to us where things seemed to be progressing really well until their new doc took over & after over a yr with them wouldn’t put me on meds due to my BMI. We then seen online one of the major ivf clinics doing an open day, so we thought why not go check them out no harm hearing what they have to say. So we went & the amount of info we got within an hr was amazing. We switched to them & within 2 months they had me on med ready for cycle 1. Before collection due to follicles not growing as much as they hoped they canceled cycle so we only lost deposit & not full cycle round. So cycle two the following month my meds were more than doubled for the first few days then decreased but still higher than 1st cycle & the difference was amazing. From that cycle only 1 embryo made it through blastocyst and ICIS to be planted. Unfortunalty after 2 wks test came back as negative. We took few months off from meds except folic acid & vits as well as been put on CO Q10 & Dhea tablets to help egg quality. So we went back recently meds were changed, and higher doses. 10 eggs collected from retrieval 5 weren’t strong enough to be inseminated. From other 5 there was 3 that made it up to transfer. 2 were strong enough to b planted on the day. With them giving the other embryo an extra day to see if progressed to become frozen. Unfortunalty this didn’t happen. So two embryos implanted. They called me back 12 days after for hcg blood test which came back as 49, call from them told me it’s a low positive & they decided could be just as b4 2 wks, so back I was 2 days later & levels rised to 69 but nurse basically told me non viable pregnancy, to stop meds & possible I’ll have atopic pregnancy. My husband checked on line plus with holistic therapist who I went to for ivf treatment & online it stated levels for 1-3 wks pregnant can be from 5-50. So my husband rang the clinic back & explained all this. They said they expect levels to b in the 100’s so he told them was late in evening when transplant took place so nurse said possible late implantation so to go back up in 2 days. So after 3rd blood test levels went to 133.8 nurse told me looking good but they still need be careful & said about early baby scan. They also required me back up 4 days later for repeat. So hcg levels now at 377 but nurse said doc advises me to come off my meds as they still think levels low and saying non viable to me again. From anything online my levels are normal for my stage of early pregnancy. As anything up to 1-3 wks is 5-50 and up to 1-4 wks is between 5 to up to in the 400’s which for 3 wks not to far off. I’m afraid if come off my meds (Cronine gel in morning, clexane and progesterone injection in evening) if it will harm risk to my baby, we were also told b4 that small chance of miracle happening & conceiving naturally around time of ivf so this is also a possibility which means I be few days behind where clinic would say im at. Has anyone else been through something similar & if so what did you’s do? Thanks in advance

I'm not sure how it works in fertility clinics but at our gynae clinic we really don't use what number the HCG is at as it's not a useful number, we use if it doubles in 48hours. That's the key thing really with a viable pregnancy. I've read the stuff online that you're on about and really HCG levels vary so much I wouldn't really put much stock in 'it should be x amount at x week'.

Good luck with everything OP, hopefully someone more in the know with fertility stuff can come and advise

Thanks for your reply. My husband has seen on line can be 48-72 for levels to double so mine seem fall nearer the 72 hrs. Gonna keep fighting and taking my meds until they get me early scan as what ever I can do to keep my baby safe & growing then I will do x

Hi OP not been in your situation but surely since your numbers are doubling every 2 days there is a chance you have a viable pregnancy? It seems insane to make you come off all meds when things seem to be progressing albeit with lower starting numbers. When are you supposed to go back and see the dr? You will probably get more responses on pregnancy/infertility/conception boards but didn't want to read and run.

Hi, I would agree with prequelle regarding hcg doubling as an indicator of a viable pregnancy.

From my experience, hcg levels do not offer very much meaningful information and serve to cause more stress in an already stressful situation. Mine were taken in relation to miscarriage.

There have been people on here who have had low or slow to rise hcg levels and gone on to have healthy pregnancies though.

Fingers crossed for you op.

My ivf pregnancy hcg test was in the 50s. I was told this was the low end but the numbers don't matter - it's the progression. Mine doubled every 48 hours and I had a healthy child.

From your numbers it does seem that the progressing but not fast enough. From memory I took crinone gel and celexane for 2 week so if you are having a healthy pregnancy you should be coming off them soon anyway?

I have spare of most of meds to cover me up to about wk 8 I’d say apart from clexane. So not sure if clinic would prescribe more when they advising me to come off it. But from what you’s lovely people on mumsnet are telling me plus from information online I seem to be in the right bracket range for been 3 wks tomoro. I’ve also been experiencing tender breasts (worse in evening than day) tiredness and nausea. Which all early signs. Feel like walking on egg shells each day to get further. My levels are rising (hubby roughly worked them out so for my stage of doubling every 72 hrs then should b about 400 so ain’t far off it at 377. X x

Thanks @ itslikerainonyourweddingday. I did see when googled clexane that on a post one woman said she on it till 20 wks & someone else said 12 wks. So does seem to vary. I have made appointment for my own medical doc down where I live to go speak to her as once ivf clinic releases me from 12 wks I b with own doc & hospital for appointments so I decided to go see her sooner as hopefully put my mind at ease. Next blood text with clinic is this Friday coming so if they come back saying the same I’m pushing to be seen by early baby unit. X x
