Best guest room ever!

Waytooearly · 22/04/2019 22:08

My new place has a spare room which I am trying to make into a really nice guest room. I usually just buy Primark sheets etc. but thought I might splash out here to make it really nice.

Any recommendations for really cosy bed linens? Anything to make the bed nicer like a mattress topper? Any other ideas to make a guest bedroom really comfortable?

What a lovely thread! Perhaps spare toothbrushes and toothpaste. A phone charger if you have a spare? Otherwise just focus on having a comfy clean bed in a dark quiet room.
For bed linen I’d wait until the sales if possible. I still like habitats stuff which is often reduced. Or secret linen store or John Lewis own stuff is good and marked down in sale.
I’m sure your guests will appreciate the effort. X

I stayed with a friend once who used to be a housekeeper...She kept all the shampoo etc samples from magazines etc and had them in a little basket.

For me, definitely 100% cotton sheets, not Primark. A duvet can be used as a mattress topper. Curtains/blind that blocks the light. Extra blanket. Electric blanket or hot water bottle. Bedside light. Somewhere to put a suitcase. Surfaces clear not covered in ornaments so no room for own stuff. Matching towels. Coathangers.

Matalan does cheap but very nice high thread count cotton bedding and towels.

Black out curtains
Good pillows
Extra pillows
Charger
Some complimentary toiletries
Water glass
Couple of novels

Def some kind of shelf or table by bed and a light on it. Space in a cupboard or drawer. Mirror with space next to it for makeup etc, and socket by mirror. Extension lead if necessary. Thin duvet but extra blankets so your guests can have bedding how they like it.

Lovely thread, lucky guests of yours Smile

A few good books by the bed.

kayakingmum · 22/04/2019 22:18

Travel kettle, mug and sachet of hot chocolate.
I hate UHT milk so really appreciate it when I'm offered a little jug of fresh milk the night before so I can have a proper cup of tea in bed in the morning.

This is lovely .
If you have a garden I’m always touched when someone has put flowers in the room, like a few daffodils or primroses or something

Anorak do nice bed linen and have a sale currently. They also have matching towel sets.

safariboot · 22/04/2019 22:23

No mattress topper. Toppers are for shitty or worn-out mattresses. Get a good sprung mattress. Not a memory foam one, some people find them too hot.

Egyptian cotton sheets from somewhere like M&S. And feather duvet and pillows for a feeling of quality and luxury.

Agree that window coverings need to make the room dark.

A desk and chair might be nice.

ImpossibleGirl · 22/04/2019 22:24

We have limited powerpoints in our guest room, so have a four plank extender popping out from under the bedside table.

Spare toiletries, sanitary stuff and extra loo roll in the bathroom.

Clear surfaces, clear set of drawers, mirror with decent lighting for make up, small blanket box with extra blankets, comfy chair, black out curtains, bedside lamps and super comfy mattress. The sheets are a cotton poly blend from dunelm that feel silky, never need ironing and aren't sweaty.

The room is a bit draughty as the windows need replacing (hence having extra blankets available) so definitely not perfect, but it always gets good reviews from friends and family.

It's just a room for sleeping though- the time spent with you should be the main draw card 😁

The Primark 400 thread count bedlinen is very good value, and feels as though it cost 4 or 5 times the price.

Hairdryer, with diffuser.

Bottle/carafe of water.

Books.

Shower cap.

Hot water bottle.

I stayed somewhere where the home owners had left a fluffy white dressing gown on the back of the door with a note peeking out from the pocket saying ‘just hanging around in case you need me’. I thought it was a lovely touch.

Hecateh · 22/04/2019 22:53

As above with the addition of blackout eye masks - just in case, new ear plugs, again just in case, particularly if close to a flight path, busy road or similar, a unisex dressing gown to enable loo visits (even if en suite, for emergencies).
Paracetamol and or ibuprofen - particularly if a drink or two is being enjoyed before bedtime.
And if you really want to spoil, sachets of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, moisturiser and mini toothpaste/brush - but I wouldn't put more than enough for whoever is staying as it makes it look a bit commercial.

Noooo! I love mattress toppers & I have a nearly new mattress! Who wants to have only a sheet between them & the mattress?

Either a thin foam one or a padded one with elasticated fabric sides makes a bed much nicer to sleep in Smile

Try TK Maxx for all your bedding, OP. It's a bit hit & miss obv, but if you're lucky you can get some fab stuff for a reasonable price

Nanalisa60 · 22/04/2019 22:59

Nice white towelling robe on the back of the door !! nice fluffy towels I leave mine on a chrome radiator towel rail, box of tissues, in the summer I have cotton bedding in the winter I but on brushed cotton bedding.

julensaor · 22/04/2019 23:02

a big mirror

Plaiceholder · 22/04/2019 23:04

Just had guests for the long weekend and echo everything on here. The room had:

Fresh flowers from the garden
Loads of books
Bedside tables
Reading lights
Towels
Toiletries

...and most importantly....the WiFi password.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/04/2019 23:06

A thermostat on the radiator and / or a key for the window locks. I hate staying in a room where I can't regulate the temperature.
A hook on the back of the door for a coat or dressing gown.

SnugglySnerd · 22/04/2019 23:06

Lots of lovely ideas but I'd give the feather duvet/pillows a miss. They are awful of you are allergic as I am. I wouldn't be able to sleep for sneezing and streaming eyes.

Homesense is good for things like mattress toppers and linen.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 22/04/2019 23:11

We have the best mattress in the house on the spare bed, was ex display so a great price and lots of guests have said they got their best night's sleep ever. I think a robe, good towels, a spare blanket and space to put clothes away/hang them up are all important.

I wouldn't use feather duvet or pillows as I have friends who are severely allergic.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/04/2019 23:17

Their own (nice) towels as it's awkward wondering which of the host's to use
Bottled still water and a nice glass to drink it from
Little pack of lovely chocs - the sort where you get 2 or 4 in a box
Decent bedside light, maybe a magazine by the bed
Box of tissues and individual toiletries as PPs mentioned
Plenty of wardrobe / drawer space and good quality, matching hangers

StBernard · 23/04/2019 02:53

Bottle of water and a little glass by the bed? Extra soft blanket for the bed in case they're too cold. Towels for the guest to use. Little card with the WiFi password on if you're happy to share with your guests.
