Best guest room ever!

Waytooearly · 22/04/2019 22:08

My new place has a spare room which I am trying to make into a really nice guest room. I usually just buy Primark sheets etc. but thought I might splash out here to make it really nice.

Any recommendations for really cosy bed linens? Anything to make the bed nicer like a mattress topper? Any other ideas to make a guest bedroom really comfortable?

I think some of these ideas a bit ott for a domestic spare room. Black out curtains, cotton sheets, 2 pillows per person, towel (not white), water, WiFi code, toiletries - usually all someone needs and they can ask you if they need more eg charger/drier. Basic mattress protector is just good sense on any mattress given how expensive they are.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 23/04/2019 05:58

The main thing is for room to be as free as possible from your personal clutter.

...and in six months time you'll be on here grumbling about people staying too long Wink

ImogenTubbs · 23/04/2019 06:11

Decent pillows
Bedside lamp
Mirror
Phone charger
Hairdryer
Spare toiletries
A few books, maybe,

When can I come and stay? Grin

No polycotton. 100% cotton only.

Good quality feather duvet (but with the means to do sheets and blankets if they are allergic to feathers).

Bedside light.

Curtains that actually keep out the light.

That’s it really.

Wallywobbles · 23/04/2019 06:23

I've got some amazing sheets from tkmax they're like being caressed.

SnugglySnerd · 23/04/2019 06:26

I would still suffer with my allergy even if a feather pillow or duvet had been swapped for blankets. The allergens would be on the mattress/sheet. This has happened to me before, in fact it ruined my wedding night. Also blankets are really uncomfortable. Just avoid the feathers!

Ferfeckssake · 23/04/2019 07:48

Full length mirror .And a small bin.I really hate when I go anywhere ( not as a guest though - too glad to be invited ! ) and there is no bin in the room.

The guest room in my last house had blackout curtains, matching cotton bed set, extra pillows in the bottom of the wardrobe, which had one section empty for guest use, a bedside table and lamp, an empty chest of drawers, a selection of books and puzzle/suduko books on a book shelf.

Mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower cap, toothpaste, toothbrush, mini hairbrush, phone charger, etc.

A set of fluffy towels, slippers and a robe. Fresh flowers and a little box of chocolates or some fruit (depending on what the guest likes). I love looking after guests.

We also do a buffet style breakfast (tailored to what the guest likes) with rolls, homemade bread, preserves, pancakes, cooked bacon, eggs, smoked salmon, etc.

We have a decent coffee machine even though we don't drink coffee, as well as instant and flavoured coffees, fruit teas, herbal teas, black tea, etc.

ScienceIsTruth · 24/04/2019 09:04

Also (obviously) a nice, fluffy carpet, a small swing lid bin, and a full length mirror and hooks on the back of the door.

TheMightyToosh · 24/04/2019 09:13

A mirror near a plug for hairdryer and straightens. I've stayed in so many hotel rooms where this doesn't happen, so trying to straighten hair in the reflection of the TV 😡

ExpletiveDelighted · 24/04/2019 09:14

Comfy bed and bedding, bedside light, space to put your things away, towels, wastepaper bin and mirror.

I'd be puzzled if I found bottled water, chocolates, fruit etc in a bedroom TBH, that seems a bit hotel-like. No need for toiletries either, I bring my own.

The other thing for me is no artificial fragrance - bedlinen washed in fabric conditioner, reed diffusers/plugins and fresh flowers all get a thumbs down from me.

Space in wardrobe or drawers to put away your things if staying for a few days.

It’s lovely that you are so thoughtful. Does sound like you are running a bnb.

I just offer a glass of water before bed and tell them the WiFi passcode. They’re friends!
They don’t need laminate print outs.

Bed is comfy, sheets are clean. They’ll have been well fed and watered!

Langrish · 24/04/2019 09:32

White Company linen. Bit pricey but lasts forever. We’ve still got a couple of duvet covers we bought after we got married 30 years ago.
A few magazines, including maybe about the area you live in, Cornwall/Devon/Yorkshire Life sort of thing, a funny like Private Eye and maybe a news periodical and a proper reading bedside lamps.
Water and glasses, Coffee maker if you can stretch to it: can feel a bit awkward going down to someone else’s kitchen first thing and a little box with some individual biscuit pack.
If it’s en-suite, a blind at the window (!) and a couple of nice, thick cotton towelling bathrobes.

BlueSkiesLies · 24/04/2019 09:35

what time breakfast is

Its staying with a friend/relative, not staying in a B&B with set breakfast times!

No need for toiletries either, I bring my own

I don#t provide mini gust toiletries but guests are told to help themselves to my bottles in the bathroom, although I find most people bring their own

Lots of these things I#d just expect a gust to ask "hey Blue, have you got any paracetamol, I've got a killer headache" or have a good rummage through the bathroom cupboard to find some. I only have the kind of guests who are comfortable and treat my house like their house though.

LucheroTena · 24/04/2019 09:42
