What is the most unusual place you have been to? The kind of place that people are surprised you've been too.

Mine was Svalbard - most people haven't got a clue where it is.

That's a bit remote! I've been to a few places off the beaten track. e.g Vestmannaeyjar. But a lot of these places are only unusual of the reader hasn't heard of them.

RidgedPerfection · 21/04/2019 18:28

I lived in Belize for a few years; most people haven't heard of it or, if they have, know where it is.

PunkRockHippy · 21/04/2019 18:30

Wolf and Darwin, the most remote of the Galápagos Islands.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/04/2019 18:32

I'd love to go to Svalbard.

Probably mine was Rwanda. People thought I was suicidal.

Rtmhwales · 21/04/2019 18:35

I went to Antarctica - was one of the first people in the world to stand up paddle board there with penguins jumping about. Have also been to some very very rural countries in Africa that seem to surprise people.

Ted27 · 21/04/2019 18:37

The Dogons in Mali and Timbuktu, a lot of people don't think Timbuktu is a real place. Mountains of the Moon in Uganda,

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 21/04/2019 18:37

Beirut. Just before the millennium. In a period of stability for the country. Loved it and the people.

fizzysci · 21/04/2019 18:58

Ghana and Burkini Faso

Cattenberg · 21/04/2019 19:05

Bhutan. I’d like to go again. The mountain scenery is stunning and the architecture and culture are so distinctive. A unique and beautiful country.

Finfintytint · 21/04/2019 19:06

Canvey Island. Very odd place.

lljkk · 21/04/2019 19:09

I've been to Belize... 1989. No idea that was exotic.
Serbia? Not many go there.

RidgedPerfection · 21/04/2019 19:14

I've been to Belize... 1989. No idea that was exotic. I am guessing you're ex - forces? People who are serving or ex - forces don't view it as exotic I don't think (I didn't when I was there). People who aren't tend to view it as much more so in my experience. Same as Iraq, Afghanistan etc I suppose in terms of how opinions differ!!

cariadlet · 21/04/2019 19:26

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ghana, Moldova, Belarus and Transnistria.

I've been to loads of other countries but those are probably the leadt touristy.

lljkk · 21/04/2019 19:29

Nope! Not ex-forces. Did run into some memorable British Squaddies while there. I think we knew before we went about the historical (military, land claims) tensions with Guatemala.

I was travelling with my mother who had (some) reason to go to central America. We flew into Merida, saw Chitzen Itza, then probably via G into Belize. Stayed in a villa type place but expensive in Belize city, then went down to coast & stayed in some little Belize island (tiny airplane ride) where we hired 4 quadbikes (I think). Sandy sleepy high street. Saw Tikal in Guatemala, but barely b/c had to waste 2 hours searching for coffee for my mother (she could not function without). Rode for miles on top of a bus just because I could. Met hustler indig. women in native dress who made amazing fabrics at some famous lake (also G).

Belize was very sleepy. Not memorable compared to G or Mexico, I guess.

My mom went to El Salvador & Nicaragua in '80s, too.

RidgedPerfection · 21/04/2019 19:46

@lljkk sounds like Ambergris Caye perhaps or maybe Caye Caulker. I did get to spend weeks at a time in the jungle which was brilliant (and hard work!). But yes, it's a sleepy place in the main (although I did see a pretty violent and turbulent side too, due to my job out there). I found Mexico and El Salvador very hectic in comparison; didn't spend long enough in Guatemala to form an opinion - just went to Tikal and a few other tourist spots.

lljkk · 21/04/2019 19:58

oops... I just posted a long reply for this thread but on another thread. Oh, the shame. Blush

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 21/04/2019 20:06

I've been to Belize! Also Sarajevo.

Hollowvictory · 21/04/2019 20:11

Belize is v popular holiday destination.

Tilikum · 21/04/2019 20:13

My most unusual place is probably Swaziland. It was the friendliest place I've ever been. People would come up to you in the supermarket, introduce themselves then start chatting. Our hire car broke down and a friendly man stopped, fixed it, gave us some food and advice for getting back to Jo'burg then waved us off. I loved it.

In the same trip I also went to Lesotho; unfortunately I couldn't get a stamp in my passport because the border point was contained in a caravan and somebody had stolen it... That was a real otherworldly place; huge, green, misty mountains and people living in traditional round huts with straw roofs.

Tequilamockinbird · 21/04/2019 20:14

Israel. Only went for the day but it was beautiful and the locals were very friendly.

Whenever I tell people I've been to Israel, they look at me like I'm mad!

Penguinpandarabbit · 21/04/2019 20:24

A place in Australia with tree kangaroos living in the house in Atherton Tablelands.

Xiaoxiong · 21/04/2019 20:25

Mine is Georgia. The most wonderful place I think I've ever been, food and wine excellent, stunning scenery, gorgeous music and churches and truly odd soviet stuff still hanging around. We drove up to the border with Chechnya and it was so beautiful and also had a feast with three village headmen on an island in a river coming out of some enormous caves behind. Tbilisi a lovely city too, not too destroyed by communism, but there are empty cities and rusting factories out in the countryside. Stalin's birthplace also very weird with a museum that just skips over whole chunks whenever history got a little awkward.

Youngandfree · 21/04/2019 20:28

Lived in Trinidad for a while.
Another place I have been where not many ppl have been or know of is an island off at Vincent called bequia...it is heaven on earth! 🙌

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/04/2019 20:31

Northern/Turkish Cyprus.
Denmark... Many people seem surprised we've been there.
