Targeted attack on Sri Lanka in hotels and churches. British and Americans amongst the dead.

Doesnt seem to be a thread about this..

This is absolutely horrific - there are reports of further explosions in the last few minutes too
Sad

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 10:38

Oh really? Terrible.

RedForShort · 21/04/2019 10:43

Just heard about this.

Seems there's just been a seventh and eighth explosion just now.

Awful. Really awful.

RedForShort · 21/04/2019 10:49

I don't understand why some news events get non-stop coverage and others get nothing more than a scrolling banner.

Would it be down to something like there being no correspondent in situ?

SarahTancredi · 21/04/2019 10:50

Oh crap:(

That's just awful.

Bowchicawowow · 21/04/2019 10:52

This is so awful. It’s a great country. I know people who go are Sri Lankan Christians with family still over there and I can’t bear to think about how worried they must be.

PerkingFaintly · 21/04/2019 10:55

Awful. Sad

I know it's ridiculous to worry about my Sri Lankan-origin friends' families, as the chances are low for each individual, but I do anyway.

PerkingFaintly · 21/04/2019 10:56

Snap, Bow.

flapjackfairy · 21/04/2019 10:57

Well to be honest they always downplay attacks on churches.there are currently at least 2 churches a day defaced in Europe but there is little or no coverage of that.

Madhairday · 21/04/2019 10:58

So awful :(

I understand the worry, Perking. I know two Christian families in Sri Lanka, and can't help thinking about them.

Why do people do this? Why? 😥

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 10:59

Yeh its strange it's not bigger news tbh.
Let's hope there is no more explosions. I guess the death toll will increase as people injured and in hospital may very well due from injury. What a waste.

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 10:59

@flapjackfairy well they're in 5 start hotels too

OP posts:
LettuceBe · 21/04/2019 10:59

It's the main story on the BBC news site. There's regular live updates at the side.

flapjackfairy · 21/04/2019 11:01

Good. All terror attacks should be treated with equal horror. Obviously. But sadly it isn't always the case.

LettuceBe · 21/04/2019 11:02

It's horrific. Poor people just going about their business and some evil bastards whom they haven't done anything to, decide to slaughter them en masse because they're the 'wrong kind of people, or their religion offends them'. It becomes ever increasingly impossible not to despair of humans

iamH · 21/04/2019 11:06

Its the main story on sky news with live updates and reports

Persimmonn · 21/04/2019 11:06

I don't understand why some news events get non-stop coverage and others get nothing more than a scrolling banner.

Which other news events? Does there have to be a competition between which terror attacks deserve more coverage?

What has happened is terrible, truly horrific. It’s been breaking news all morning and I’ve had 5 notifications on my news app about it. So I don’t understand why you think there’s no coverage.

PerkingFaintly · 21/04/2019 11:18

Well this is certainly getting more coverage than last year's attacks leading up to the state of emergency. How many people on this thread even know about Buddhist extremist violence?

I'm guessing it's got coverage because the attacks are on hotels as well, affecting Brits and Americans, and because they are co-ordinated.

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 11:20

Persimmonn hmm I got one alert from Google about it. Nothing else. When there was the fire at Notre dame had was endless updates and alerts. Even the threads on Mumsnet about it. People flocked. Yet here we are, with actual loss of life and we have 19 posts...

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/04/2019 11:20

The news media in the uk is very slanted towards white people news. So Europe, America, Australia etc. Atrocities in Asia and Africa always go under reported.

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 11:21

PerkingFaintly And because it's a Christian holiday...the main religion of the UK perhaps?

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/04/2019 12:30

It’s horrific and cruel

Sadly the troubles have been bubbling again for sometime but this sort of attack is utterly horrendous

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/04/2019 12:33

Agree Perking

It’s more interesting to report this attack as it’s more sensational and no doubt planned that way

IncognitaIgnorama · 21/04/2019 12:39

Slaughtering people at worship always feels even "worse" than a "regular" terrorist attack somehow - not that there's a hierarchy of victimhood or something, and evil isn't really a question of degree, so I can't even explain what I mean Confused The Egypt attacks were similar - there's somehow something even more egregious about targeting worshippers on the holiest day in their calendar.

I know it's to have maximum impact, like the Christchurch attack: if you are after worshippers in a mosque, Friday lunchtime is generally the peak of attendance, and I know it's not objectively worse than targeting worshippers at any time. But it feels that way to me. Sad

I'm surprised this isn't a more populated thread tbh: I heard about it on the way home from church around 7.30, but it didn't seem to be headline news until much later.

PerkingFaintly · 21/04/2019 13:04

Official toll now over 200.

Sorry, I don't have anything useful to say. I'm just so Sad about the whole thing.

There are so many folk of all backgrounds crowding to the blood donor service that they've had to turn people away. Religious groups have denounced the attacks.

Sri Lanka's been through so much.
