I was staying at a hotel in Liverpool as part of a conference. I was in my room the first evening writing a speech at my desk. Suddenly the door opened and a man came in. He was shocked to see me and I said that this was my room. He showed me the paper envelope he had and it had the same room number on it. The poor guy kept apologising even though I assured him it was not his fault.

Later I went down to the main desk and asked to speak to a manager who told me
this couldn't happen as my name was on the room. I said it did and whether it was human or computer error it should not happen. The manager offered me a drink and said she would investigate. When I asked before I left nothing had been done as it was just an accident and no harm done. This is a large chain. Would you email or leave a review or just not be bothered?

What make you think she doesn't investigate it? I would assume she looked into it. She had no obligation to get back to you about it. You were given a free drink and no harm came to you. I would just forget it.

I disagree @UCOinanOCG. I would have felt very unsafe sleeping there, especially as a lone woman. OP is lucky she was in the room when the man opened it as otherwise he could have taken anything. Also lucky she was awake and he was as mortified as she was, it could have lead to an awful outcome for the OP.

I would email their head office, as I would want reassurances regarding their booking systems and how this happened. I wouldn't stay there again if they couldn't/wouldn't investigate the incident.

We had this but we were the intruders. Awful. Family room and woman just coming out of the shower. Kids were scared even though my kids were first in.

The hotel grovelled, a lot. And we got 2 rounds of free drinks (8 drinks). And I made it very clear to them that they should compensate the family too who had poor / no English. We saw them with vouchers in the bar later and they waved and smiled.

I think it probably happens quite a lot. Certainly this hotel (airport one near Manchester) was not surprised.

See I would have shrugged and thought 'mistakes happen'.
