I cant see another post about this. 29 year old Lyra McKee shot dead when dissident republicans fire at police during riots. 21 years since the Good Friday agreement. Im frightened for our wee country and my children's futures.

Another family devastated .

Solitude things are far from normal here noone disagrees from you, but the difference today compared to the 80s and 90s i remember is huge. Murders and bombs on the street weekly, civilians killed, along with tit for tat murders. There is just no comparison to the life most of us live today. This is why this is just so shocking, and a stark reminder of just how bad things were in the past.

It really is most shocking. A journalist shot while doing her job.
From here, Northern Ireland looks like some rogue state uninterested in the 21st century.

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 15:18

And i say that as someone who's DH was on the receiving end of some pretty serious intimidation recently.

Chocolatepeanuts I hear you. We have had similar - purely because we had the audacity to build a business and be successful. We also know the man responsible and what he used to do back in the day, hence my earlier rant (which may not have been worded in the most eloquent way!).

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 15:30

It is frustrating solitude. Someone involved with building our house recently left the country with a shit load of debt. Guess who was left to come up with the money again even though we had paid through the nose 1st time around. Its criminal. We have never been involved with ANYTHING like this in the past, and it was shocking how quickly you can be dragged into something that is in no way your fault. But ill take it any day before going back to the chaos that was before.

We have no connections with anything like that either - my husband is ex-army (and English) and does not suffer fools gladly so you can imagine the conversation that took place when he was paid a visit.

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 15:38

My DH is the opposite. He waa terrified. They got everything they wanted.

Time will tell if he was wise or not - my husband, not yours in case that wasn't clear!

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 15:49

Well i feel the same...not like he got a receipt Confused

No chance of a refund then or a bad review on Yelp! You've got to laugh really - where else would this happen?

breaker · 19/04/2019 16:07

Unfortunately there is still a large part of the population who support terrorist activity. They vote Sinn Fein and they appear as respectable people but they support terrorism in our country. My DH is in people's houses every day (appliance engineer) and hears directly from these people (predominantly in Derry and West Belfast) that they will never condemn past terrorist acts, they understand what the terrorists now freed do for a living now (crime related) and would support them again. Both the terrorists and their supporters should be condemned for the acts of violence last night. NO community should seek to justify those acts.

Shelbybear · 19/04/2019 17:11

It's disgusting and shocking, poor lady and her family. So sad. Hope this is not the start of further trouble.

Yewtown · 19/04/2019 17:31

Breaker it's not just people on one side you know. There are DUP voters who turn a blind eye to the same behaviour in their communities. That is the issue with this place it's them'uns and us'uns. There is no place in any community for murderous criminal gangs whether they be of green or orange persuasion. #not in my name

ASAS · 19/04/2019 17:36

Stacey Dooley has a brilliant documentary on, well, you know.

IvanaPee · 19/04/2019 17:37

To be clear: it’s not only republican groups who have been dormant rather than non-existent. Hmm

Lyra was an incredible woman. It was an accidental shooting but that doesn’t help Sara or her family.

IvanaPee · 19/04/2019 17:39

And one man’s terrorist in another man’s freedom fighter, let’s not forget that.

Plus, just become someone wears the infirm of the British army doesn’t mean he’s not a terrorist. Trust me.

MissEliza · 19/04/2019 17:43

This thread is truly depressing from reading about the intimidation going on or the people that try to excuse terrorists. Jesus Christ.

IvanaPee · 19/04/2019 17:45

Who’s excusing terrorists?

ASAS · 19/04/2019 17:46

I think she's referring to the statement rather than anything we've said

Oh, right! I really didn’t want to seem as though I was defending terrorism!

MissEliza · 19/04/2019 17:48

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter is excusing terrorists.
We live in a bloody democracy. Use your freedom of speech and right to vote to make a difference and fight those you disagree with.

IvanaPee · 19/04/2019 17:51

So you were accusing me of defending terrorism.

With all due respect, you obviously don’t have the wherewithal to understand the nuances and complex situation in Northern Ireland.

And if you come back and say “I’m from Northern Ireland” then that’ll be even more laughable.

Eve · 19/04/2019 17:51

It’s horiffic - so sad to see this again.

And to those saying it never stopped - it hasn’t, the violence and intimidation is still there.

In 2017 there were 101 punishment shootings or beatings - 101 mainly young lads knee capped or beaten! That never gets mentioned in the news yet stabbings in London attract so much media attention.
