Is a "small single"/2.6ft bed big enough for a teen?

My daughter is 11 but really small for her age. We are moving and her new room is very small, as she wants the box room rather than share with her sibling.

I'm considering downsizing her bed from a standard 3ft wide bed to a 2.6 "small single". Full length just a bit narrower, which would solve some issues with the layout.

But bit worried it won't last her. Obviously changing bed size means new bed and new mattress so don't want to keep doing it.

She is very small for her age. Always been around 9th centile for both height and weight, so I think it's fine, but DH is concerned it won't last.

Has anybody had any experience with 2ft 6 beds? Were they comfortable enough or too cramped?

Thanks Smile

don't know about that size bed. Would a cabin bed be any good?

Jjacobb · 18/04/2019 21:49

My dd had a bed this size until she was 15. She's very slim and shorter than average. When she did move into a normal sized bed ds 13 swopped his cabin bed for the small single.
It's been fine and I think it will be ok for at least another couple of years.

I'd say it would depend on the child. If your daughter is small and petite, then she'd probably manage fine.

I have massive children, my 10 year old is over 5 foot already, he'd not manage in a bed that size.

My (small) 15yo has one and it is also used by several adult guests, it's fine.

We've just got one for DD who is 9 but very tall. It seems fine and I expect it to last her through the teenage years.

beela · 18/04/2019 21:53

I had a 2'6" bed until I left home at 21. It will be fine.

I had a 2ft 6 bed until I was an adult. As a teen my best mate slept with me in it and bizarrely I took it with me when I moved out! I did move onto a double eventually but I must have been about 22... seems madness now to be fair!

My parents have a small single as a guest bed. We've all slept in it at various points from my 4yr old to my 6ft 17 year old and it's fine for all of us.

Have you considered a loft bed like this? You can fit a desk etc underneath

I slept in a 2.6 bed in my hall of residence at uni. It was fine.

Witchend · 19/04/2019 09:06

If it's the length, no, if it's the width yes.

We all had 2'6 beds at home including my 6'2" brother, who did try and claim things due to his height, but never a bed.
He slept on it when he went home right into his 30s, when he got married.

safariboot · 19/04/2019 09:09

I wouldn't unless the room is absolutely too small to fit a bed and a desk otherwise. It'll be hard to find a quality 2'6" mattress, and getting bedding will also be a nuisance.

beela · 19/04/2019 09:15

Bedding is fine, you just use normal single size.

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 19/04/2019 13:56

Thanks guys, I think I will go for it. I will make the room much more useable and planned to get a divan with storage drawers, but if it was full size single she wouldn't have space to open the drawers fully.

Maybe a high sleeper, to free up floor space? Ceiling height permitting.

missnevermind · 19/04/2019 14:06

Two of mine have this type. One is now 10 and the other 18. We have had them a few years now.

I had a 2’6” in my first student home, and often shared it with my now DH!

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/04/2019 14:10

The mattress on DS's is the comfiest we own despite being 15+ years old.

Blibbyblobby · 19/04/2019 14:13

Oh just saw your post about divan drawers. How about a single ottoman bed, the type that hinges open? Then you don’t need any more floor area than the bed itself.
