HeyJude81 · 18/04/2019 19:44

Woolworths 😃 it had everything you could possibly ever want! 😂 and ‘Athena’ where everyone went to buy that poster of the half naked bloke holding a baby 😍😂

DrMidgeryMargery · 18/04/2019 19:50

Does anyone remember ‘James the Second’? I seemed to have gone every weekend to the one at Merry Hill shopping centre in Dudley with my parents. It sold what I would today call tat. My parents collected little cat figurines from there and I thought it was so sophisticated. Same with The Pier.

Cocolapew · 18/04/2019 19:51

Woolworths, I still miss it.

Angelinthenightx · 18/04/2019 20:09

Woolworths,i still miss it too, they should bring it back to the highstreet.

LeonoraFlorence · 18/04/2019 20:10

Woolworths definitely!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 18/04/2019 20:18

Body Shop when they had the perfume carousel. Fond memories of being 16 and having a perfume right in there and getting chucked out.

tobee · 18/04/2019 20:25

We had lots f independent shops n the high street when I was growing up so the names won't mean anything to most people. There was a toy shop when I was tiny that was floor to ceiling shelving and cabinets full of dolls and games etc which was like a wonderful dream to me! Didn't go in often. The assistants used to get stuff down for you.

When I was a bit older I liked the shop that sold American clothing and the one that sold hippy stuff Grin. I was desperate to look adult at 11/12 in the late 70s.

Then later on it was Our Price record shop!

Schofield's in Leeds. Proper, smart, classy department store. John Lewis ? Harvey Nichols ? Forget it. Schofield's, on The Headrow, was where it was at. Shame HOF got hold of them.

Yorkshirelassie · 18/04/2019 20:39

Bay Trading Company as a teen! I thought I was so cool...Confused

Tobebythesea · 18/04/2019 20:41

jmh740 · 18/04/2019 20:45

Woolworths for the pick and mix

DeadZed · 18/04/2019 20:46

We had a Co-Op department store. Four floors plus basement of all kinds of stuff. There was a proper Santa's grotto every Christmas too. It was always exciting when we went there.

Surely Wilko's is the new Woolworths!

tinytemper66 · 18/04/2019 20:52

Woolworths and Merretts

ILOVEALLCAKES · 18/04/2019 20:53

C & A!!!
And Tammy Girl

AdaColeman · 18/04/2019 20:54

We used to visit a fabric and haberdashery shop that had a pneumatic cashier system, using canisters and tubes to whizz your cash payment to the central cash office. It was like living science fiction when I was six! Smile

Then there was the excitement of new buying shoes, and being able to see the bones of your feet inside the glowing green X-ray machine! Wonderful...until they were banned! Grin

princessconseula · 18/04/2019 20:56

MK1
Adams
Dolcis
Tammy Girl - especially for miners make up and t shirts ... still have a very old bracelet upstairs from Tammy that I’ve never chucked out for some reason !
Woolies/Woolworths

Clevs · 18/04/2019 21:00

Woolworths
Tammy Girl
An independent department store called Russel & Dorrell that had a great toy department and Santa's grotto.
Co-Op department store
The Gadget Shop
Athena

And I know the Body Shop is still around but I used to love the Dewberry fragrance they did in the 90's. Also White Musk but I think that's made a comeback?

Clevs · 18/04/2019 21:01

Oh, and Dolcis. The only shop I could get shoes in a size 9.

DobbyLovesSocks · 18/04/2019 21:06

Barrett's
C&A
Adams - more so now I have a child. I LOVED their clothes
Woolworths
Alders
Tammy Girl

I also miss BHS

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 18/04/2019 21:06

I loved Chelsea Girl as a young teen - it seemed so fashionable and grown up

As a new uni student I came across The Reject Shop and loved it for decorative odds and sods for my room

teyem · 18/04/2019 21:07

Athena and Blockbusters.

Vole3 · 18/04/2019 21:11

The local cash and carry - building igloos out of the 10kg slabs of cheddar in the chilled room. DS now builds forts using packs of loo roll

Justanotherbadhairday · 18/04/2019 21:18

We had a local shop called ‘weigh and pay’. It was full of bins of spices, cereals, nuts and other random bits. Also dog food and broken biscuits.
I loved having a wonder around in there. They did these amazing lemon or strawberry lollies that were chewy and fruity but with holes in like they had bicarbonate in. They were the size of ice lollies but sweets and I have never found them anywhere else.
Really want one now Smile
