Dolcis for me. Loved their shoes

IndigoSpritz · 18/04/2019 21:32

Wray Bros. in Leyburn, North Yorkshire was a good old-style hardware and homeware shop in the 1970s and 1980s. It's still there in its original ancient building but it has modernised and diversified somewhat. I think Leathley's now own the business.

Woolworths
Kookai
And we had a record shop called vibes which I loved hanging around in on a Saturday, looking at the picture disks,
Happy days 😀

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/04/2019 21:46

Tammy and claires accessories- my mum would sometimes buy me a lucky dip bag!

MouseTheDog · 18/04/2019 22:00

@DrMidgeryMargery I was just thinking about James the Second the other day, specifically the one at Merry Hill (were there others?) My friends and I used to go in there and look at marbles and other tat.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/04/2019 22:02

My sister lived in Chester when I was a kid, and I love visiting them and shopping there.

They had a Body Shop when it first came out and I loved it. I used to buy little fruit soaps, scented wooden balls, papier-poudree ( little books of grease blotters for your face) and all sorts.

They also had an Inside Story, which was like a cheaper Habitat with a cafe. I thought it was very sophisticated.

At home I loved WH Smith’s, before it went crap. I could spend hours in there, looking at the books, stationery, records, magazines...my godmother gave me a £5 voucher every Christmas and I could stretch it for miles in the sale.

froomeonthebroom · 18/04/2019 22:04

clevs I loved Russell and Dorrell too, especially the toy dept. Do you remember Pratleys? Was so scared I would knock over all the crockery stacks!

stucknoue · 18/04/2019 22:07

Woolworths for pic & mix

notacooldad · 18/04/2019 22:07

Pinkarsedfly
My favourite shop is in Chester as well.
When I was a young child there was a toy shop on The Rows. We had to go to the city twice a month and my dad would let me choose something from there.
I remember most getting a slinky and another time a magnetic butterfly that had a second magnet so you could drag it over a tray or similar!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 18/04/2019 22:16

Tammy Girl was the height of fashion
Claire's Accessories and their 16 packs of earrings
La Senza and their underwear in my mid / late teens (though I suspect I'd still be shopping there now...)
Woolworths (pick n mix)
Toys R Us (I have vivid memories of buying a light up yoyo there in the midst of a craze, and DM asking me if I was sure it was worth £5)
The Entertainer

RomaineCalm · 18/04/2019 22:18

Our Saturdays 'up the precinct' always took in...

C&A (particularly Clock House)
Tammy Girl
Burton and Top Man for pink polo shirts
'Dotty P'
Body Shop (for dewberry products)
Boots 17 counter (for sweet sizzle, twilight teaser, shaders/toners, sun in)
Dolcis
Freeman, Hardy, Willis
Our Price
HMV
Athena
Paper chase

And a 'wimpy burger' on the way home.

Loved Plus 4 .Trendy jeans shop in Newcastle and a 80's shop called Snob .

WH Smith - did great stationery back in the day
Athena - I had a fab lunch tin from there
The Reject Shop - full of quirky house stuff
Local record and poster shops - Volume récords and Durham Book Centre
Flip - vintage jeans

KenDoddsDadsDog · 18/04/2019 22:24

And Body Shop !

Ronsters · 18/04/2019 22:25

I used to like a chain of bakers called Hagenbachs (70's), nothing fancy but they did lovely crusty rolls and sandwiches.

I loved W H Smith for the books and stationery.
And a toy/bike shop in a neighbouring town, it always had loads of Pippa/Daisy doll outfits.

I've always loved fabric shops/stalls, even though I can't sew. I could spend hours looking at the fabrics, ribbons and buttons.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 18/04/2019 22:27

The Golden Egg in St Albans. My sister used to take me there - we weren't allowed fizzy drinks at home and it felt deeply rebellious.

spottycap · 18/04/2019 22:35

I loved Woolworths. Especially the pick n mix. Glorious

notacooldad · 18/04/2019 22:36
