Any suggestions what to put in cellulitis to stop it hurting so bastard much?

Bastard mozzie bites have turned into cellulitis. I have antibiotics but it’s not getting better (second sort of antibiotic started today).

It is beyond sore it really really hurts like a total bastard.

Any suggestions for anything I can put in the skin to soothe it a bit? I’d have asked in the pharmacy but was feeling crappy and forgot.

Ice pack wrapped in a teatowel, voltarol gel. Elevate if leg. I've had it several times, it is a pita and hurt more than my dvt!

I hate the way a casual question like this on MN can turn into a long thread insisting you go to hospital and I'm not suggesting that but if it's not responded to the first lot of abs it doesn't sound as though it's under control .

Is your GP ok with that ?I just think if it's so painful and you've had it a while that maybe further advice is necessary ?

Definitely elevate .

Hope it eases OP .

As Perdito said might be worth getting it llooked at again. Even popping back to the pharmacist to show them and ask for something to ease the pain

What type of antibiotics? Fluclox is the first they normally should prescribe. If that doesn’t work well they may prescribe upping the dose if it. Following that (or instead of upping the dose) next to try is Calvapen. Broad spectrum things like amoxicillin don’t target the two types of bacteria that normally cause cellulitis.

Disclaimer - not a pharmacist or doctor but have had cellulitis 10 times.

GVmama · 18/04/2019 15:16

I was told to salt soak my foot (I didn't try it, luckily the antibiotics kicked I'm after a few days). You have my sympathy, it fecking hurts!

BastardMozzies · 18/04/2019 16:27

Had fluclox since Monday. Spoke to gp today who has added amoxy. Need to watch it and 111 if worsening.
It’s ok, I’m not septic, no temp. Just horribly sore and I’m a professional hypochondriac so shan’t suffer in silence.

I've had this several times from insect bites too - on cheekbone, wrist and top of foot as well as leg more than once.

Keep an eye on it, have you drawn a ring around the current inflammation so you can see if its spreading.

Don't let it get worse as it can be really serious. And yes, the pain is AWFUL! I have had broken bones and cellulitis was more painful.

You have my sympathy Flowers

RockNRollNerd · 18/04/2019 18:54

You may need a different type of antibiotic. It was the third one they gave me that started to work (Clarithromycin or Erithromycin I think one of those for sure). In my experience (not a doctor) the antibiotics should kick in quickly so if it’s not getting better within the next few hours please do call 111.

I was told after I got the third lot that if no improvement in 24 hours I had to go to A&E cellulitis is not something to fuck around with.

I think I took a lot of painkillers as well. Both paracetamol and ibuprofen but not sure if you’re supposed to or not.

It is incredibly painful. I’ve broken various bones and found cellulitis far worse.

Crinkle77 · 18/04/2019 21:44

My colleague had this recently and was in hospital for a few days it was that serious so do keep an eye on it and get help if it doesn't get better.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/04/2019 22:13

My first episode didn't respond to amoxy, so I went into erythromycin on top of it. That cured the infection, but the subsequent diarrhoea lasted a week. The next two the GP was on the ball, and fluclox sorted it in 12 hours. Icepacks, voltarol gel and shitloads of moisturiser to minimise the blistering.

ohdearmymistake · 18/04/2019 22:25

Is it really painful? I've had it once and didn't find it that bad, am I weird ?

3boysandabump · 18/04/2019 22:34

I had it after my last section and would have taken the pain from the section over the cellulitis any day.

I found putting an ice pack on gave me slight relief in between the painkillers

GVmama · 19/04/2019 21:37

How are you doing now? Hope you're on the mend!

Get some Yakult and some sauerkraut/ kimchi etc for good bacteria if you've had a few different types of antibiotics. It'll help your recovery no end.

BastardMozzies · 19/04/2019 21:53

Still alive thankfully. Starting to be less hard and swollen but still bloody hurts. But getting there thanks.
Also thanks for gut tip. It’s feeling a bit dodgy so will track down gut stuff tomorrow
