Constipation - sorry

I’m so embarrassed . I’m very, very constipated and sore . I’m scared to take laxatives having had reactions to them in the past - severe pain/cramping and diarrhoea . I’ve got IBS, gynae problems (ends and PCOS) and chronic pelvic pain . Suspect some combination of that plus painkiller use is what’s put me in this position .

I’ve managed to go the loo this morning but have ended up with quite a bit of bleeding from the front - not due a period for ten days although I am quite erratic anyway . Not sure if being so constipated can cause bleeding from there . Or if I need to see GP .

Is there anything I can use in the house to sort of kick start things in the meantime ? I’m currently drinking a pint of apple juice then will start on the orange ... have had a rummage for prunes - we have tinned peaches but suspect they’ll be useless .. usually a plate of vegetables gets me going Blush but can’t stomach that just now . Anything that doesn’t involve dosing myself up with more tablets would be great !!

There's always suppositories, if you feel blocked low down?

BasilWhoosh · 18/04/2019 12:49

I know you say you're scared to use laxatives but lactulose is very gentle. I would also get some psyllium husk and take a dose of that (make sure to drink plenty of water)every morning to keep you regular.

Yes, I would use a suppository in the first instance to get a good clear-out today.

For the longer-term, devise a diet that will keep your bowels moving that you will enjoy eating and that doesn't aggravate your other conditions. I know that's easy to say and hard to do!

See your GP - have you tried lactulose, for instance?

For over-the-counter/online stuff have you tried Lepicol? Had great success with this for my chronic constipation which is now aggravated by medications.

I don't have IBS myself, but have heard of people with IBS managing to use this fine. There is a variant of Lepicol that contains good bacteria.

I get great results with apples. Perhaps you could juice them (leaving the fibre in of course) if you can't face munching through them. Constipation can make you feel a little nauseous, I find.

Good luck. Constipation is utter misery, I know.

Beans on wholemeal toast sorted me out.

When I was pregnant, for breakfast I used to eat a large bowl of all bran, oats, dried apricots and prunes , ground linseed, and either apple or kiwi on the top, then a pint of water and a glass of orange or apple juice.
Helped loads!

A couple of very ripe pears.

Eating anything specific isn’t going to help now if you’re that badly constipated and the poo is effectively ‘stuck’.

The gentlest way to get things moving are glycerine suppositories which work very quickly.

TheQueef · 18/04/2019 13:27

Are you still hunted up or are things just moving slowly?

TheQueef · 18/04/2019 13:27

Hunted?!? Should be bunged!

princessconseula · 18/04/2019 20:58

It has calmed down a bit thank God ... after much hard work unfortunately !! Will definitely speak to GP , it’s horrendous . I think I’ve tried the suppositories before but found they just caused cramps as well . Very sore now Blush . I seem to swing rapidly between constipation and diarrhoea with no normal in between for some reason , no idea if that’s IBS related though .

I can get blocked up easily, despite lots of fibre. When it gets bad I get lactolose. And I take 2 sachets of laxidoo daily to help me keep going x
