Jerky client got me down

Just a grump. I'm a lawyer and I took on a client for an urgent case. The clients were lovely and even though it was a crazy tight deadline I thought, yeah I'll push it through.

Worked super hard and got it all done, feeling pretty pleased with myself. Worked all Sunday, ten hours yesterday, twelve hours today.

Unfortunately the last step involves interface with a government website that's mysteriously inoperative. It is not just me, this is an issue among practitioners all around the country. I told the clients as much and said I what I was doing to address it...

Cue the 'lovely' mask falling from client's face as he actually said, 'For the amount of money we're paying you I'd expect you to figure it out.'

You just have to laugh. Yes, for £1000 I will.. fix a government website, immediately.

It's fine, my work for them is done and they've paid. No more going above and beyond for them!

Is it just me or is it the clients with super difficult complex cases are the grumpiest, whilst the clients with the easiest cases are the most grateful, with flowers etc?

I find the wealthiest clients are the most understandable. They often have life experiences others do not, more so if self made. Less wealthy clients can behave like they own you sometimes.

At about £35 per hour for your work (registering a trust?) they can find another...or DIY.

I find the wealthiest clients the most difficult
Those with more money are far more pleasant and prompt at paying

Thanks for the sympathy. No not a trust, but along those lines. Don't want to blow my cover too much.

It is something that people can do on their own.

If they try to complain I've got impeccable notes, they can go for it. My boss is amazing with client complaints. We one had a guy try to bully my colleague into doing the impossible by calling her 'incompetent' and my boss just called his bluff by saying, 'She's very competent but if you think she's incompetent then we can't accept your instruction. That's a breakdown of trust. We'll courier your file to you by close of business.'

I find the poorest clients are the ones who pay on time!

The loaded ones are the ones who dick around,at least in my experience. This same guy was dicking around that the government fes are too high. Seriously dude?
