Will swimming help me

I really want to lose weight, tone up and feel better. I have a good 2 stone to lose, possibly more.

I wanted to ask if I swam for 90 minutes a day - slowly doing the breast stroke - it would be gentle and not fast, would it be worth it? Would I see anything?

You probably need to eat fewer calories. Really you won't lose weight any other way.

Dancingbea · 17/04/2019 20:55

If you did 90 minutes I am sure you would. But really? Every day? That is a long time! I am bored after 20 to 30 lengths, and certainly by half an hour.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 17/04/2019 20:55

You'd be better off doing something fast and hard work for 15 minutes, along with counting calories. Are you reasonably fit and able bodied?

FurrySlipperBoots · 17/04/2019 20:55

I think 90 minutes of slow up-and-down swimming a day could get really, really boring! Maybe a class like water aerobics? You'll want to cut down on your calories too.

Prequelle · 17/04/2019 20:57

Your body would seriously benefit from it as could your mental health but from a losing weight perspective it's mainly about diet. 90 minutes is awesome well done

ZenNudist · 17/04/2019 20:58

90mins is a long time. Will you be able to do that every day? I wouldn't have the patience. I would have thought it would help but youd need to watch you don't eat as much as you burn. Youd probably start to speed up. It is good for tone and a whole body work out.

Can you do crawl? Ive been doing 45mins mainly a reasonable pace crawl 2-3 times a week for a year. I think i lost more weight giving up biscuits and cake for lent. Swimming makes me hungry and really tired. I love it and its good for my bad back.

As others have said 90 minutes a day is long and boring plus swimming makes me ravenous after so it’ll be counterproductive if you leave the pool and replace all the calories for weight loss. However it would be good for toning up and if you can really commit to 90 minutes every day go for it. I couldn’t, I get bored after 20 minutes but I have about 4 stone to lose.

If you want to lose weight I can't recommend Team RH enough. It's an online coaching group. It doesn't cost the earth. The support is wonderful. You'll eat real food on a controlled amount of calories that will not leaving you feeling hungry. They will want you to get moving though. 15k steps is what they recommend.

joggingon · 17/04/2019 21:01

Yes. But so will gentle walking which is equivalent and only if you're in a calorie deficit. I used to swim wearing a heart rate monitor. The effort was a bit depressing unless I was doing front crawl. I think you are likely to overestimate your calories and not lose weight TBH. do 1:10 frontcrawl and gradually increase. X

Rollindowntheroad · 17/04/2019 21:03

90 mins is a lot. You may find that tough on your neck doing breast stroke - what about front crawl (swimming lesson on technique great to do too). What about a shorter swim and an aqua aerobic class? Or every other day? You will tone up arms and chest a lot. Good luck OP

Knitclubchatter · 17/04/2019 21:04

Swimming is an excellent all around exercise.
However your diet will play a bigger role.
Swimming and leaving the complex with a fruit smoothie or having some “extra” cheese and crackers because you deserve it, will negate any hard work put in.
Personally 90 minutes is too long, daily I’d do 20-30 max. Even better brisk walking 4 days a week and swimming 3.
No matter what you do, it will take time and determination.

Snappedandfarted2019 · 17/04/2019 21:04

Depends if you’re doing breastroke with you’re head up out the water it will do nothing or if your were doing breastroke breathing every single arm pull then that would be better, maybe throw in some frontcrawl. Swimming is good for fitness but you would been to build up some cardio with it and push yourself in order to lose weight especially 2 stone.

managedmis · 17/04/2019 21:04

Can you actually swim for that long?

SkisonW · 17/04/2019 21:43

I did that today and it felt fine. I don’t think I would get bored as I really enjoy the tie to unwind and I could definitely commit to it 3-4 times a week. I was just wondering whether it would achieve Anything weight wise?

Ski I’m a swimming teacher so always happy to see some one swimming!

Do your swimming it will help towards toning muscles especially your bum!

But you dont actually burn that many calories unless you are really pushing yourself.

Eat fewer calories and keep up with the swimming!

tentative3 · 17/04/2019 22:36

@Amongstthetallgrass I've never really considered the bum toning effects of swimming... Tell me more! Any stroke in particular? My glutes never engage and among the other things I can do to work on them I'd love it if swimming was one. I'm seriously quad dominant.
