Does anyone else's house make strange noises in the night!

Just that really...
In the late evening I hear funny noises sometimes. Occasionally it wakes me in the night slightly. The creek of a floorboard, furniture sighing, even the walls maybe! sometimes I think it's just the house yawning or reshuffling or something.
It's not scary - this is not a 'is my house haunted - question. Just find it interesting.
Anyone else's house like this?

Mine is a Victorian house, about 120 years old. It's certainly got its own personality & quirks.

My house is only 14 years old, but the floors upstairs and the stairs are very creaky when walkd on.

However, sometimes there are ‘footsteps’ across my daughter bedroom floor when no one is upstairs.

Every evening one of the door handles upstairs kind of clicks, as if it were stuck and just suddenly released itself.

Yep. And my house was only built in 2007. Blush

My house is wooden and makes really loud cracking noises as the wood expands and contracts.

Ours is 130 years old and this year we have really noticed an increase in general creakiness, as well as weird ( and unidentifiable) random night time sounds.

abcriskringle · 17/04/2019 19:14

Yes mine isn't even that old (50 years?) and we get loads of creaks and groans. The thing that scares me though is that at night I can hear the neighbours walk up and down their stairs and often in a half-asleep state I think it's someone coming up my stairs! I nearly had a heart attack the first time I heard it as generally we don't hear our neighbours at all.

StillMedusa · 17/04/2019 19:17

Mine's around 40 years old and sounds 100 (a bit like me really!)
The stairs creak, various floorboards groan and the house sighs now and again.

Mind you the really weird noises mostly come from my selection of adult kids about at all hours!

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 17/04/2019 19:28

Yep, ours was only built in the 80s but as a little mid-terrace we get all sorts of lovely creaks and sighs as the house settles in the evenings. Quite often it sounds like someone wandering about upstairs and the kitchen makes some wonderful bangs once it gets dark Grin
The house noises are better than the wildlife outside though!

😂😂 love all these! And so pleased it's not just my odd little house.

Yes my parent's house does. I always joke that the friendly burglar is visiting again.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 17/04/2019 20:33

Ours is the noisiest house ever, the cracks & things I hear on a night I'm sure the whole lots is going to collapse one day!!

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/04/2019 00:32

God yes. Mine bangs and crashes like a good’un and it’s not even that old.

Mine is the same. We have a wooden attic structure that bangs and cracks loudly. I'm a light sleeper and can even wake up with a start!

Do you find it worse at certain times of year?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 18/04/2019 01:48

This probably wasn't the best thread to read at 1am in a Victorian house.

wanderings · 18/04/2019 06:27

I remember a children's book which had a very short title:

Why?

One of the questions in the book was "why does furniture make noises at night"? I remember (aged 6) being surprised by this, as I hadn't noticed it. The book explained about things getting bigger and smaller in the day and night, adding that furniture makes noises during the day too, but we can hear them more at night when it is quieter.

Definitely, my house is a normal 2 storey semi detached English crib, and I swear down when it’s quiet at night, everything seems to make a sound, my tv, the drawers my tv’s on, the upstairs floors, like pops and bangs all the time, like you said not scary but it does make you wander how the fuck do these inanimate objects make noise
