Apart from having kids or getting married.

Mine was a few years ago seeing a whole field of fireflies in the USA at dusk. The air around me was lit up with their little green lights. It took my breath away and I burst into tears Blush it was so unexpected and so beautiful I don’t think anything else will ever come close.

Would love to hear what others moments are.

Last summer we were at London Southbank having a beer outside and out of nowhere this brass band with about 50 people comes marching past.

I love brass instruments and there was so much excitement and energy to it. It was just fabulous!

Monr0e · 17/04/2019 20:34

Both of mine occured in extremely mundane circumstances.

The first was in a forest in Kendal, I was with DH and our 2 DC's. We had gone for a walk on a cold autumn day. Out of nowhere a breeze suddenly blew and lifted all the fallen leaves and into a what seemed like a giant whirlwind all around us.

The second time I was walking to work to start a shift at 7am. It was January and it was pitch black freezing cold. As I approached the hospital a double decker bus drove past and caught the branches of a tree above my head which dislodged a thousand ice crystals that seemed to dance in the air above my head. It probably only lasted a couple of seconds but like you OP, it took my breath away and has stayed with me.

Beauty in the ordinary and unexpected.

New Year's Eve 1999 in New Orleans.

Arriving in Cuba in the pitch black and waking up to a hotel room directly on the beach.

Climbing a waterfall in Jamaica. Sunsets watching tropical storms also Jamaica

Mrscaindingle · 17/04/2019 20:36

I've been lucky enough to have a few,

Lying on the crew deck of a cruise ship in the Carribbean looking at the stars which seemed close enough to touch.

Waking up in a tent with DC in Oregon and running around the sand dunes in our pyjamas, it felt like we were on the moon.

Having an unexpected fun evening with my 2 teenage DC and laughing our heads off are probably the most magical times of all however.

Jade308 · 17/04/2019 20:36

Oh and shooting stars with zero light pollution on Exmoor

OnlineAlienator · 17/04/2019 20:37

My honeymoon in scotland is tough to beat, just loved everything about it.

Zofloramummy · 17/04/2019 20:37

Dawn whilst travelling by train in Egypt, watching the cattle brought to water.
Standing in front of the Great pyramid, cruising down the Nile.

Camping in Kenya, the smells and sounds. Eating breakfast overlooking a lake and with birds on the back of every unoccupied chair!

Every time I drive to Northumberland and my soul soars. The people, the coast, the stars. My spiritual home.

BitOfFun · 17/04/2019 20:38

Stepping out from the railway station on arrival at Venice, straight on to a view of the Grand Canal. It was so beautiful that I cried.

IndieTara · 17/04/2019 20:38

Ooh @IHaveBrilloHair seeing Damon Hill win the Belgian gp at Spa in 98 for Jordan !

Cel982 · 17/04/2019 20:40

Singing in a choral concert a few years ago, our last number was a fantastic version of a very well-known, rousing song. As we neared the climax of it our normally very staid conductor suddenly turned to the audience and beckoned them to join in. Immediately the whole auditorium was on its feet and singing along. It was an incredible, transporting moment, it still gives me goosebumps to think about it.

IndieTara · 17/04/2019 20:41

@whatamidoingwithmylife that was probably the safe thing to do. You wouldn't have got in trouble but youd almost certainly have been groped!

PierreBezukov · 17/04/2019 20:42

Swimming in the cold Atlantic ocean off the north coast of Ireland - every time is magical but it's nice when seals and dolphins join me.

Singing alto in Faure's requiem in a choir at university ; singing soprano in Mozart's requiem at school.

Driving around the mountains of Donegal listening to Clannad, Maire Brennan or Enya.

Walking around Ephesus at dusk.

Walking through the forest and my first sight of Lough Neagh - the UK's largest fresh-water lake.

I wish I had the awesome experiences similar to what people have listed on here.

An experience which 'magical' seems inappropriate however I was very fortunate and privileged to witness was my dad's passing.

He had a terminal illness, was well cared for and after diagnosis never went back to hospital, his pain was well managed and with the support of district nurses he was cared for at home.

We knew he was going to die in the next few hours, days seemed too optimistic, and he was sleeping soundly in the bed in the room.

My siblings were sleeping in the floor, it was my turn to sit with dad, and as I turned away to reach my drink, he passed away. No coughing, struggling or gasping.

But, the most amazing part was the look of serenity in his face, he was turned to face a space in the room and had the most beatific smile, not a loss of tension in muscle but genuine smile, and to this day I believe his mum, my amazing grandma, had come to collect him to rest.

If people could have such a kind and comforting passing it would be a blessing.

Ankor Wat at sunrise

Swimming with sharks
Sailing in the arctic circle

Staying with a lady who rescues injured tree kangaroos at other wildlife in Australia. Soon as we arrived she let us all go and feed the pademelon and possum, then next day we saw three tree kangaroos and one jumped on me and we saw her feeding them and one bouncing into a tree then she told us where we could see a platypus in the wild and then she let my daughter bottlefeed a rescued bettong.

Also seeing brown bears in wild in Finland, having a family of raccoons come up to us in Costa Rica and seeing sloths there and seeing penguins on beach in Cape Town and Great Barrier Reef. We love animals!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/04/2019 20:47

That’s really wonderful JoyceDivision. We should all be lucky enough to go like that.

QforCucumber · 17/04/2019 20:47

After our wedding ceremony outside in the sun (afterwards so it counts) we went to a high restaurant to watch the sun set over the Las Vegas strip. From there it started snowing, the skyline just disappeared right before us and the first snow in Vegas in over 15 years happened. It was stunning.

Unihorn · 17/04/2019 20:48

@Lozz22 I agree, or watching Wishes for the first time.

Also camping in the Gower and watching shooting stars during one really hot summer. It was great!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 17/04/2019 20:49

Too many to mention but this thread has reminded me of being on a boat in Milford Sound, NZ and dolphins swimming alongside the boat. I had scrimped and saved for a year to do the trip and just that one moment would have made it all worthwhile.

LittleMachine · 17/04/2019 21:51

Walking out of the door of our log cabin in Lapland into the snow on Christmas Day. It was silent, glistening and just magical.

Watching Liverpool win the champions league in 2005. I was only in my local pub with my dad but the atmosphere was just electric. Similarly, every time I’m at Anfield singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Goosebumps galore.

Sarahlou63 · 17/04/2019 22:06

Happens once a month. With a full moon our land is almost as bright as day so I walk around at midnight, listening to the birds, who sing so loudly at night, and connecting with our horses. They are so relaxed and natural in the moonlight and it's magical to just watch them and give them a friendly scratch.

sparkli · 17/04/2019 22:10

Driving home from Glasgow Airport at dawn and seeing a huge stag in a field just outside Stirling. The mist was rising off the field and this magnificent stag was just standing there with the milky sunrise behind it. It took my breath away.

FrankiesKnuckle · 17/04/2019 22:17

Today, watching Dumbo at the cinema with my 5 year old.
The bit where they separate mum and baby jumbo....

5 year old looks at me, can see I'm a bit misty eyed, they put their hand reassuringly on my arm and then on to wipe away the tear that had formed. Truly magical to me, a very touching moment that I won't forget.

Squiff70 · 17/04/2019 22:18

In a time of deep emotional distress, I grabbed a friend and we escaped to the Lake District for a few days. We stayed in Brigsteer in February 2008 - it is surrounded by hills and there is no light pollution.

EEven night we used to leave the B&B and just stand outside. We could see the Milky Way and not only was it breathtakingly beautiful, we realised now small we really are. As if that wasn't enough, the real cherry on the cake was the dozens of Tawny owls all calling to each other across the hills. It was bone-chillingly cold but the most warming, special, beautiful and precious moment of my life.

MrsFriskers · 17/04/2019 22:31

Diving at Silfra. Swimming with my girls at the Faerie pools in Skye. A cold, solitary swim in Madeira under Camaro de Lobos. Blue lagoon in Wales (swimming again).
