How often do you take the kids away on holidays?

And where do you go?

OP posts:

2 holidays a year - UK at Easter and Europe in the summer. Plus a couple of weekends away.

gotmychocolateimgood · 17/04/2019 21:11

UK holiday at Easter for a week (holiday cottage) by the sea, 2 weeks in Europe in the summer and a couple of weekends away each year. We tend to follow this pattern as it works for us.

museumum · 17/04/2019 21:13

A week skiing in February and a week and 3-4 weekends in the campervan.

ReginaGeorgeous · 17/04/2019 21:17

Usually about three times a year. Last year we had 2 weeks in Mauritius in January, 2 weeks in Lanzarote in July and 10 nights in Greece in September.

I have a sibling living abroad in a European capital and go we over there for a couple of long weekends a year.

I don't like UK holidays and would rather spend my annual leave abroad.

yearinyearout · 17/04/2019 21:30

When they were growing up we used to go abroad once a year, have a cottage week in the uk and a couple of camping or caravan weekends.

ChoudeBruxelles · 17/04/2019 21:33

1 child (13) this year one week in uk, camping in uk for a couple of nights, and week abroad in October

Last year two separate weeks abroad.

timeisonmycider · 17/04/2019 21:34

Been abroad once (last year) and kids are 11 and 9.

Go away for a week's self catering maybe once every other year.

Never seem to have the money for foreign holidays which baffles me as our mortgage is small, we only run one car and our combined income is not far off £100k Confused

These threads never fail to bring home to me just how shit we must be with money to basically be never taking our kids abroad and not able to.

Purpleartichoke · 17/04/2019 21:40

We take a proper holiday, once every three years. The rest our our time and budget goes to visiting family.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/04/2019 21:45

Two weeks in a self catering cottage. Need self catering for children's allergies/ disabilities. Two weeks gave me some holiday as in one week most of it was spent cooking and cleaning and childcare and shopping.

We used to afford one week in half term when it was cheaper than summer before they cracked down on term time holidays and priced went up.

Mum gives me some money so we can go away otherwise we could not afford it.

HearTheThunderRoar · 17/04/2019 21:46

These threads tend to be posted by people who can afford multiple holidays per year etc.

When DD was young in the 2000s prior to the recession I think I took her abroad five times. So in the last decade its been three times (and I became a sole parent then). One was the USA when I got some inheritance.

Other than that, its mainly been staying with my parents / brother (but they live in a nice holiday location). Done a couple of road trips, couple of city breaks but nothing that fancy.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/04/2019 21:47

We are fortunate to be able to go away. Friends can't afford it.

Gertie75 · 17/04/2019 22:56

Why do you want to know OP?
Are you researching?

You asked 6.5 hours ago and haven't replied or said why you want to know.

ohtheholidays · 18/04/2019 01:43

It depends really what we have going on in the year but we usually manage 2-3 holidays a year.

Usually in the UK,2 will be seaside holidays and 1 will be a city break.

elliejjtiny · 18/04/2019 01:49

Oldest dc is 12 and we have been on holiday 5 times since he was born. Mostly to stay with grandparents in the uk.

Purpletigers · 18/04/2019 02:05

We don’t go away very often tbh . We’ve had three holidays abroad with the children . Youngest is almost 10 . Definitely not a priority for us or something I feel my children are missing out on . I can’t imagine saving up all year just to blow it in a couple of weeks abroad .

Sleepyblueocean · 18/04/2019 06:06

Once a year to visit family in uk, staying in a holiday cottage. We did places like center parcs when he was younger but his disabilities make holidays very difficult now and so we stick to days out.

fr33d0m · 18/04/2019 06:23

One holiday to Europe every 2 years as we have to save a few grand each year to do so. Usually all includive in spain because DP doesnt like traveling out of his comfort zone. The year we don’t go abroad we go to cornwall for a week in a caravan. My parents have a holiday home in skegness so we go there maybe once or twice a year for a cheap weekend. It’s difficult getting annual leave at the same time and we’re saving for a house deposit soon as I qualify so probably won’t go on a ‘proper holiday’ for a few years.

Oh we’ve been taking our toddler on an under 5s little break too and will probably continue that as long as we can

Exexexcel · 18/04/2019 06:49

Wow some people take a lot of holidays. We go to the UK seaside for a week once a year. And I feel pretty lucky for that.

SherlockSays · 18/04/2019 07:11

Florida every other year and we have a static caravan so we go there every other weekend, bank holidays and for a week in the summer.

DD is only 9 months though.

YouJustDoYou · 18/04/2019 07:13

We don't.

hopefulhalf · 18/04/2019 07:20

Holidays are a priority for us.
Twice a year without fail; skiing in Jan/Feb (often self catered or the "cheap week"- usally 2nd week of january), europe in August (again self caterimg/campimg). We put £200 per month away which usually covered most of it. Now we are better off and they are older we do more long haul.

NancyJoan · 18/04/2019 07:21

We usually have a week in Cornwall in May, and then a beach week in Europe either October or August.

Cherylshaw · 18/04/2019 07:24

This will be our first family holiday, dcs are 1 and 4 and we are going to salou I'm actually a little bit nervous about it tbh. We are planning on going on holiday once a year

BeardedMum · 18/04/2019 07:41

We usually do a ski break in February, go somewhere warm like Italy for Easter and do a couple of weeks abroad in summer usually Northern Europe at the beginning of August and a City break at the end. When the children were younger we always went to Cornwall in August and we have holidayed a lot in the UK. I love holidays and travelling and it’s what we spend our money on.

thisisthetime · 18/04/2019 07:45

We love our holidays. This year we are taking dc abroad 3 times, 2 long haul and 1 short haul. We also have a week in the uk booked. Last year we took them abroad 5 times and 1 UK holiday. Most years it’s approx 5 holidays.
