How often do you take the kids away on holidays?

And where do you go?

OP posts:

We first took our son on holiday when he was 8 weeks old, and then again 4 weeks later.

My DH works really hard and loves his holidays, he gets 5 weeks holiday per year and so we always go on holiday for 5 weeks. Usually 2 x 2 weeks and a 1 week (oct half term)

We took our son to Florida 6 years running until he got to year 6. We also love holidaying in the UK, our favourite places are Isle of Wight, Bournemouth, Eastbourne, Norfolk Broads and most of Dorset, there just has to be a golf course nearby.

Once a year. I alternate skiing one year with summer holiday the next. Ds loves skiing and until this year didn’t like heat.
This year (he’s 10) he wants a pool and some sun and other boys to hang out with.

So I might get to lie by a pool this year Grin

jmh740 · 17/04/2019 17:18

We usually have 5 days on a haven site in the summer, I took the children away for a long weekend to Morecambe at the start of the Easter holidays. Eldest ds is at uni in London I usually try and have a few days there at least once a year

babysharkah · 17/04/2019 17:20

3 weeks in summer either USA or France. Try and a get a week or 4 or 5 nights in uk in Easter and October.

Maybe a couple of weekends visiting family in a seaside town as well.

SileneOliveira · 17/04/2019 17:26

Don't get the point of these threads.

Responses will range from people who have had one weekend camping in Wales in the last 20 years, and people who are away 10 weeks of the year in the Maldives.

We go away 2 or 3 times a year. Mix of UK and overseas.

onemouseplace · 17/04/2019 17:27

Once or twice a year and maybe a camping weekend as well. I like holidays, but DH doesn't have that much time off, let alone the finances to do more.

I do have friends that seem to be away every school holiday, half term, bank holiday weekend and a few camping weekends as well though.

We have a week in the lakes this year and 2 X 4days camping/glamping booked for this year.
Normally we have a week abroad and a few long weekends in yurts or similar. Last year we went to Portugal and Germany for a week each. The year before it was France for two weeks. We have only been long haul once.

I love seeing where people go both abroad and in the UK!!

cookingonwine · 17/04/2019 17:35

We normally go away every half term just a Monday to Friday package in the UK. In the main summer holidays we do a week away in France or Spain. Probably if we didn't go away every half term we could afford 2 weeks at Disney, maybe I am being selfish but I have no interest in going to Disney.

Each UK holiday normally costs £700 - £800 then we have food and activities on top.

Summer holiday normally costs £3,000 but all in.

Aragog · 17/04/2019 17:38

When dd was smaller and we had less disposable income - a couple of times a year: one fortnight, one week, and sometimes the odd long weekend/ 4-5 days in UK.

This has risen with time as our disposable incomes have changed. DD is now an older teen too so easier in many ways, and only one child. We love holidays together, as a family and also with either family or friends. We do prioritise them over other luxuries.

This year we will go away at least 6 times: week in Europe, long weekend in Europe, 10 days long haul, fortnight long haul, week Europe, week in UK.

sanityisamyth · 17/04/2019 17:39

Never been able to take 5 year old DS on a proper holiday but we've had a few camping weeks locally (Somerset/Dorset/Devon) and I took him to Legoland and stayed in the hotel there. I am going back to uni for 4 years though in September so I don't think my budget will stretch to holidays etc then either. Hopefully when I qualify we can go abroad etc.

yoursworried · 17/04/2019 17:41

Once to a UK caravan park (I hate this, they love it!) and one week in mainland Europe or a Greek Island (this one is for me but they love it too!)

littlemeitslyn · 17/04/2019 17:41

5 holidays and you're not into them !!!!!

flowery · 17/04/2019 17:42

We usually go away about 5 times a year, one of which will be visiting my parents in France. We usually also do Center Parcs once a year, Cornwall once a year, a villa with pool somewhere in Europe (last year Italy, this year Spain), and something else. Currently we’re in Norfolk for a few days.

I absolutely love going away the four of us, and a high proportion of our disposable income is spent doing that.

ValleyoftheHorses · 17/04/2019 17:46

Twice a year abroad usually- last year we did Florida and Cyprus, this year Majorca and Mainland Spain. We do Florida every 2-3 years.
We tend to have a weekend at Centreparcs and a weekend with friends in the Cotswolds every year as well.
This year we’re going to London in October half term and Northumberland in the summer. We’ve rented a cottage for a week and the 3 of us are going Fri to Mon and my parents are having it Mon to Fri with DS while we go home to work.
We do OKGrin

cushellekoala · 17/04/2019 17:46

We go away once a year for 7-10 days either uk or france (camping). This year my dad paid for us to go away for half term as well ( uk) . I am usually quite shocked at other peoples holiday budgets - i reckon a few friends spend more on holidays than i earn in a year! (I dont know why i'm surprised- we live in a home counties town where everyone, apart from me and DH, works in the city or is a lawyer!)

sanityisamyth · 17/04/2019 17:48

Having said that (just remembered!) he goes to Center Parcs every year for his birthday between Christmas and New Year for 3 days. 😳

CakeNinja · 17/04/2019 17:50

Usually around 5 family holidays and then I will take them (without dp) to Spain to visit my dad once a year too.
A week over new year to Cornwall/Devon/Wales, a week or 10 days at Easter (we are away now), a week during the May half term usually a cheap Europe break, 2 weeks in August either long haul or Europe (and then I will take the dc to see my dad).
2 adults and, 2 teens and one 7 year old.

Family holidays are fun now, they were much harder work when they were all younger. Dp and I have been up and out for an early morning walk every day this week, walking on the beach in the sun. The older the teens get, they stay up later and spend more time with us which is lovely but it’s nice that dp and I can carve out some time for ourselves while the dc chill in the holiday house (they don’t want to get up and walk about with us at 7:30 Grin ).
I can count on one hand the amount of times I went on holiday before I left home - I love holidays and work term time only so like to go away during as much as possible.

cliquewhyohwhy · 17/04/2019 17:54

Normally a week away with 2-3 weekends away spread throughout the year.

youarenotkiddingme · 17/04/2019 17:58

We tend to do 3/4 nights at CP or caravan or camping at some point.

We have 1 week away end of August - in Spain.

I always seem to manage to find a holiday with 8am flights and HB for £1000 for ds and I. When I do I book it!!!

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 17/04/2019 18:02

1x a year, maybe less. Usually to a caravan on the east Yorkshire coast. We did go to Cornwall the other year and my mum sometimes takes them to her caravan as well though.

Lost5stone · 17/04/2019 18:05

We do 3 a year but at least 1 in UK. Sometimes 2.

After next Sept DD will be in school, so working round school holidays will probably mean we only manage 1 and a long weekend in the UK

RoseMartha · 17/04/2019 18:38

Once a year for a week cheapish self catering in uk.

IggyAce · 17/04/2019 19:34

We are off to Northumberland this weekend and also have a week booked in North Wales in August.
Have also booked London and Harry Potter for the end of September, we haven’t told the dcs about this one yet and won’t until the day we go.

IfYoureGonnaTakeAShotAtTheKing · 17/04/2019 20:56

Usually at least 2 x 1 week holidays and a couple of long weekends. Generally all in this country, we've tried abroad but didn't actually enjoy it as much as our holidays here!
