Talk some sense into me

There's a job I've applied for. The boss of where I used to work sent me the link to apply for it and said "of course, you can always contact me or X if you have any further questions." X being the direct supervisor of the position.

X was away until Monday, which was the deadline for application. Boss is notoriously difficult to get hold of, and frankly he'd answered a load of questions the last time I spoke to him. Therefore, I have already applied.

Boss told X I was going to call him. But....I have no idea what to ask that doesn't sound idiotic. I know what the position is, why the previous person is leaving, the people in the team, what the planned projects are (and isn't this more an interview question rather than a pre-application question). The only thing that bothers me right now is how much travel is involved, but as they know I have kids this might make me look unprofessional. X is finally out of a meeting, so I could call now. But I've already applied which makes any questions redundant. There is a prat outside my window mowing the football pitch with a massive noisy tractor thing and right now is the only time I don't have the DC this week.

What do I do?
Call? Say what?

Just say it's a courtesy call just to confirm your application and touch base.

so I could e.g. ask when we're likely to hear. Although it is rather impatient!

Doesn't help that I absolutely hate talking on the phone and need to have the conversation half practiced/written out first!

You have to contact X if previous boss has mentioned you might - I would just call to say you wanted to let him know you’d submitted your application and are very much looking forward to the interview. Is there anything you could usefully do to prepare for the interview eg presentations and does he know roughly when it might be?

That way, you’ve touched base with him and made a bit more of a personal connection, as well as communicated your keenness for the role.

Thank you Like. I said that and he replied "oh, I didn't know it had been made public yet!" They will call me for interview but I won't know for another 2 weeks Grin
