Are you meant to hover or do you sit on the bowl?

I'm not bothered by the germs, I just wondered if there was some sort of etiquette thing about not sitting down because there is no seat.

You could do handstands if you like - no one is watching!

You could do as a man on a French campsite did that we stayed on and carry around a wooden toilet seat as the toilets were porcelain only. We'd see him at least once a day stride across the field with his seat and a loo roll!

Maybe that's what you're supposed to do in France and Italy, take your own seat? Solves the issue about not sitting on 'shared' seats, everyone has their own.

worse still are those french hole-in-the-ground toilets that flush by flooding the whole cubicle the second you raise your bottom to re-balance your position

They must be strict time limits on toilet usage in France. I used a French toilet (proper one with seat too) the other day during an airport transfer and I couldn't get the toilet paper out of the stupid carousel thing and the toilet must have thought I'd taken longer than allowed as it just spontaneously flushed on me while I was struggling to get the paper out.

I create a toilet paper seat all the way around, which mostly works-for the life of me- i simply cannot neat sit on any bathroom outside of my home. I am so bad that previously on long distance plane journeys I have preventative Imodium and drunk very little(stupid I know!!!)

Do people sit on public toilet seats?🤮

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/04/2019 04:19

Well I never knew that people didn't until I read about it on here.

We are now in a fairly nice hotel in Milan. The bathroom toilet has a seat. Hooray. It also has a bidet. Beside the bidet is a soap tray with a bar of soap, separate to the bar of soap by the sink. I'm not toilet germ phobic at all but there's no way I'm touching that bar of soap. And the bidet has 2 pristine white ironed and folded cloth napkins hanging on a rail beside it.
Italy is a whole new toileting experience. Who knew? It's years since I've been here, I obviously didn't pay enough attention to the toilet facilities as a kid.
