Ariel photo of the fire.

Absolutely devastating damage.

Not a believer but praying to something that the walls hold.

Notre Dame cathedral is on fire!
AuldAlliance · 15/04/2019 21:53

400 firefighters.

indyandlara · 15/04/2019 21:54

Thank you. It is beautiful and calming place. It brought us great peace at a very traumatic time.

OstrichRunning · 15/04/2019 21:54

French authorities slightly more optimistic now than a couple of hours ago according to bbc just there now...

Thread on how Notre Dame was in a really bad way structurally. And the potential ramifications.

Elderflower14 · 15/04/2019 21:54

Firefighter has been injured 😔 😔 😔 😔

ItProtectsMyHead · 15/04/2019 21:54

Apparently a fire fighter is injured (sky news). This is so heartbreaking Sad

EnidButton · 15/04/2019 21:55

I had a very vivid dream about the Notre Dame last night. Which is feeling very weird now.

God what a tragedy.

dementedma · 15/04/2019 21:55

Sky news now causing confusion by showing previous clips of fire blazing alongside current state of affairs. Hard to know wtf is happening

AnguaResurgam · 15/04/2019 21:56

I wish the BBC would stop quoting Trump, they should be quoting Macron or the Pope not somebody thousands of miles away who doesn't know what he is talking about Angry

Macron has pulled out of his engagement (TV debate) this evening and has gone to the scene (where I hope he is not getting in the way).

The Vatican is leading prayers for the pompiers (not sure if Pope is doing that in person yet) - there isn't much else they can do right now, really

PerkingFaintly · 15/04/2019 21:56

"We can now say that the structure of Notre Dame has been saved from total destruction."

Statement from Paris fire service.

PerkingFaintly · 15/04/2019 21:56

One fireman reported seriously injured.

brizzlemint · 15/04/2019 21:56

The BBC just mentioned the injured firefighter. I hope it is a minor injury.
They have also said that the main structure will survive.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 15/04/2019 21:57

My stomach fell when I saw the drone photo on twitter.

brizzlemint · 15/04/2019 21:57

x-post with PerkingFaintly that's awful news.

PerkingFaintly · 15/04/2019 21:58

If the images I'm watching are live (BBC), the hose that was being played into the North Tower from the extension ladder has been turned the other way, far into the nave, for some minutes.

I can't imagine they would do this if the North Tower were still on fire.

So I hope that's a really good sign.

RedToothBrush · 15/04/2019 21:59

'Structure saved'
Reuters news agency is quoting an official with the French firefighting team as saying: "We can now say that the structure of Notre-Dame has been saved from total destruction".

Source BBC

PerkingFaintly · 15/04/2019 22:00

But pff, what do I know?

BlueishHueOfBlue · 15/04/2019 22:00

Sky saying the French fire fighters believe the remaining s structure is saved and it will take another 3 hours to get under control.

RunAndBeeHappy · 15/04/2019 22:00

how can they say its been saved until structural engineers have assessed all damage?

PerkingFaintly · 15/04/2019 22:01

(Sorry, that "pff" was at my own commentary on the N Tower, not at you, RTB.)

StrangeLookingParasite · 15/04/2019 22:01

Beffrois saved, also façade (France 2, now)

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 22:02

Nick Fucking Griffin is stirring up trouble on Twitter about it....

Justaboy · 15/04/2019 22:03

Well now its thought that it won't collapse and its not all going to fall down.

Hopefully thats the opinion of a structural engineer and not some emotive jurno;!

Whisky2014 · 15/04/2019 22:03

Because they know the material and how it reacts in a fire...
