Today marks thirty years since the Hillsborough disaster

Just realised from social media that today marks the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans were killed.

I was seven at the time and this is the first news story I can properly remember. Indeed I know of several people who were there.

How awful that people can go off to a football match, something that's meant to be fun and never come back. I can't get my head around it.

RIP to all who lost their lives.

It's awful it took so long for the truth to come out. Hopefully those responsible will be held accountable.

Horrendous. I read this morning that 58 people lost a parent that day. There was a young lad killed who had a cousin at my school and the two sisters who died. Unimaginable grief for those poor families.

And Tony Bland was the last to die in 1993, his parents had to go to court to have his feeding tube removed. Just horrible. I live in Merseyside and know people that were there. There is still so much anger and you will never see a copy of the Sun newspaper anywhere.

There was a person in the year below me at school. Her dad died that day

Kelvin McKenzie, The Sun editor at the time has never apologised for what the paper wrote. He used to appear quite reguarly on This Morning talking about whatever was going on in the news, then when it finally came out that there had been a cover up he was asked to come on and talk about. He flounced and refused to take part.

Arsehole.

JFT96.

I was in Liverpool two years ago on 15th April and went to the Cathedral and remembered to sit quietly at 3.06pm and pray for the families and those who died. There were about twenty others sat similarly and I saw a couple of men leaving just afterwards for whom you could see that the memories of that day still affected them.

If you want to think about how long the families have waited for justice, this happened before the Berlin Wall came down and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

BollocksToBrexit · 15/04/2019 10:06

And still nobody has been held to account. Angry

WillGymForPizza · 15/04/2019 10:10

ForalltheSaints I know. It's another time altogether, over a generation ago.

Roomba your comments about South Yorkshire Police do not surprise me.

I know one has but just a polite reminder that its probably best not to say any thing that could predjuice any protential and on going legal preceddings.

I was 8, liverpool were the club every kid wanted to support/play for.

Can't believe its 30 years.

No one should go to a football match and not come home.

i remember that day vividly. i was 17 and listening to the match on the radio with my then boyfriend. one of our friends had gone to the match and of course in those days there were no mobile phones so we couldn't get in touch with him.
We went to see him a day or two later and he was in a right state-broken ribs and terrible facial bruises but alive. he was distraught.

One of the boys i was at sixth form with was killed and i remember us doing a two minute silence .

it affected everybody in the city.

Talking to my friend years later he said that not a single day went by when he didn't think about it.

LordWheresMyShoes · 15/04/2019 11:04

I lived in the city as a student years after it happened. The grief was still palpable, as it still is today. I can't remember exactly what but there was a big campaign and move on inquest(?) while I was there.

Forget rivalry between Liverpool and Everton, the scally stereotypes and religious difficulties. I've never seen such a united city. A huge gathering of people in a city singing You'll never walk alone at a remembrance event stays with you forever.

The story of that day that has always haunted me is the parents who went with two daughters and came back with none
I know the whole thing was an awful
Tragedy but that has always made me draw breath and sums up the utter destruction of that day
Shame on those who colluded with the lies

This ^^

Someone on twitter who's brother died has stated the defence counsel will be trawling through social media today.

Today should be a day of remembrance and support, nothing else, not today at least.

sashh · 15/04/2019 11:31

Pengrin

Who are you talking to and what are you talking about?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 15/04/2019 11:40

pengrin i'm really hoping this is a wrong thread post

Or

You think your being funny and don't really understand what thus thread is about so you've replied with a standard mumnets reaponse

Because theres nothing to educate ourselves about ....unless you believe the nasty and untrue kelvin mckenise headline

crazypsychedelictrifle · 15/04/2019 11:45

I can't believe it's been 30 years. I was 9 when it happened. I'm originally from Nottingham and know a lot of people who were there that day (as Forest fans at the other end) who felt and continue to feel horrified at what they saw and how helpless they felt.
