Today marks thirty years since the Hillsborough disaster

Just realised from social media that today marks the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans were killed.

I was seven at the time and this is the first news story I can properly remember. Indeed I know of several people who were there.

How awful that people can go off to a football match, something that's meant to be fun and never come back. I can't get my head around it.

RIP to all who lost their lives.

It did initially look like a pitch invasion but then Iirc the adults who seemed to be pitch invading returned to the fence/barrier between the stand and the pitch and were helping adults in the stand pass over the barrier young kids and women - that's when I thought something like a fire was the problem. I also remember I think (30 years is a long time) seeing some of the adults pitch side going to linesman etc and asking for help, at first being fobbed off then the officials seemed to "get" that there really was an issue and start helping. But I also remember seeing police officers being arsy with the pitch side people and seemingly telling them off.

I think people especially those who lost loved ones and/or were there deserve to know why that footage was ignored, possibly even destroyed?

Because to myself and others I've discussed with in real life who were watching the beginning of the disaster live it was obvious even at the time that this was not a hooliganism/badly behaved fans issue.

I never believed the claims that it was all down to badly behaved fans not because I'm some kind of Pollyanna but because that didn't tie with what I'd seen with my own eyes.

My three year old and I went past Hillsborough on the top deck of the bus earlier and she asked who the flowers were for. I couldn't find the right words 💔 😢

A girl a few years above me at my school and her older sister who had previously been at the school died on this day at Hillsborough 30 years ago. We were in the SE, not Liverpool, but we never believed the 'unruly fans' story.

We were only children, far from Liverpool and Sheffield, but I hope that's something no matter how small.

The British police at their finest. Cause a disaster, then fit somebody else up for it and spend 30 years denying any liability.

I remember this vividly, I was 13. But I don't think I understood the true horror of it until I read about it again as an adult.

There was an excellent programme on Radio Five Live a couple of years back where Kelly Cates (is that the spelling?) was interviewing her dad Kenny Dalgliesh about it all.

I was nearly 11, and have always vividly remembered seeing the images on the news, but like pp, I didn't understand what happened till I was older. I remember when the inquests were happening, reading many of the relatives statements for each of the 95, and really thinking about what it meant and all the individual stories. I wasn't massively surprised when the truth was confirmed
