Leaving baby sleeping whilst in the garden

voxnihili · 15/04/2019 06:57

I have an 8 month old DD. Now that the weather is getting nicer I want to spend more time out in the garden. I can't decide whether it is ok to leave DD sleeping in her room whilst I'm outside. At the moment, if I need to be in the garden I either put her in her pushchair or car seat (I have a lie flat one).

If I left her indoors, she'd be in her cot in her room which is on the ground floor. Her room is at the back of the house. I'd lock the back door (it's on the side of the house so can't be seen from the garden). I also have a baby audio monitor I could use.

Is it ok to leave her sleeping while I'm in the garden? I read so many posts on here about people leaving baby to sleep whilst they pop to the corner shop and would never do that. I just can't decide whether this is ok though.

Thanks

Use a monitor

pastabest · 15/04/2019 07:01

I would in theory

In practice both mine always slept far better outside anyway so I would probably put them outside at the other end of the garden from where I was.

Yes. Take the monitor and enjoy the weather.

I always left mine to sleep in the back garden if they were asleep after a walk. Gates were closed and they weren't visible from the street.

Eminybob · 15/04/2019 07:04

Of course, as long as you use a monitor. I think of the garden as another room of the house.

Caucasianchalkcircles · 15/04/2019 07:57

Mine definitely slept better outside as long as they were well wrapped up. Sometimes left the rain cover on with one of the flaps open just for air circulation. Our back garden was only accessible via the house so it was fairly secure (no side gate or anything).

spritesandunicorns · 15/04/2019 08:19

Of course it’s ok. I’d use a monitor if you think there any chance you won’t hear her though. We ate on our terrace on holiday once, the baby was just behind the door sleeping (no other way in etc). When I went to check on her she’d been screaming for a while and in a total state. Had no idea it would be that soundproof!!

It is nice for babies to get fresh air though so if she could sleep outside with you all wrapped up that could be an even better idea.

MrsEricBana · 15/04/2019 08:22

Yes but with monitor. No need to take her outside.

kaytee87 · 15/04/2019 08:25

My DS was summer born and by the time the next spring/summer rolled around, we did this. We bought a baby monitor with a very good range. Locked the back door but kept the keys in my hand or pocket in case I needed in quickly and closed the front gate so I'd hear anyone coming in.
Just make sure nothing is left on like tumble drier, dishwasher or washing machine etc. In case of fire. Then relax in the sun.

Dimsumlosesum · 15/04/2019 08:27

As long as you have a way to monitor her whilst you're outside, of course it's ok. I used to put the monitor on the back door step whilst I looked after the older children. Could hear her crying easily.

Flamingosnbears · 15/04/2019 08:29

I wouldn't risk it I would have baby in pram in the garden that way she's getting important fresh air also or get a baby walker bet she'd love that.

SoyDora · 15/04/2019 08:32

I would with a monitor.

Newmumma83 · 15/04/2019 08:34

I already use a monitor in 4.5 months nap
Time so I can work on garden... I have video and leave it on sound he is a loud breather so leave my headphones in and listen to him breath while I work... perhaps later on I will bring him
Out ( when not mowing or strimming )

ourkidmolly · 15/04/2019 08:40

@Flamingosnbears
Risk what?

Am I missing something here? Does everyone know that the op has the gardens of Buckingham Palace? Surely she's just out the back door. What's the difference between that and in another area of the house? A lot of alarmists on here.

MrsPear · 15/04/2019 08:49

Mine slept outside whatever the weather if we had been for a walk and they were asleep upon return. My own home was a small garden flat and my grandparents a 2 bed terrace so no need for monitors just leave window ajar.

I think alot of people need to get a grip frankly - I’m guessing your the type that follow your child around the play park and onto the equipment! Grin

kaytee87 · 15/04/2019 08:52

@Flamingosnbears I wouldn't risk a sit in baby walker, apparently they're bad for development.

DieCryHate · 15/04/2019 08:53

I did, just made sure the monitor was in range.

This with bells on. What exactly is going to happen to the baby, safely sleeping in their secure cot while the OP is on the garden, FGS?

Our monitor stopped working when DD2 was 3 months old. I never bought a new one. Here's the thing: you can actually here when a baby cries. It's quite loud.

WalterIris · 15/04/2019 09:02

I would probably just settle them for their nap in pram in the garden to be honest. I would be able to relax easier without having to keep listening out or going in to check on them. If they wake up they will probably be happy to sit in pram a little longer if need and watch or can be put on a mat on the floor to play whilst you continue

Palominoo · 15/04/2019 09:53

Hate gardening but liked the babies to have fresh air so I sometimes did the opposite, baby outside in Pram and me indoors.

Although there was that one time when a pack of wolves tried to steal the baby oh and a Giant eagle nearly made off with my daughter......

PepsiLola · 15/04/2019 09:59

I'd do a bit of both, cause babies love being outside and fresh air! Don't stress about doing the wrong thing, as long as your house is safe and you have a monitor

eclipse1808 · 15/04/2019 10:28

Am i not allowed to put my washing out because my sons having a nap in his room then? Jesus mumsnet is weird

bellinisurge · 15/04/2019 10:30

kaytee87 · 15/04/2019 10:47
