Leaving baby sleeping whilst in the garden

voxnihili · 15/04/2019 06:57

I have an 8 month old DD. Now that the weather is getting nicer I want to spend more time out in the garden. I can't decide whether it is ok to leave DD sleeping in her room whilst I'm outside. At the moment, if I need to be in the garden I either put her in her pushchair or car seat (I have a lie flat one).

If I left her indoors, she'd be in her cot in her room which is on the ground floor. Her room is at the back of the house. I'd lock the back door (it's on the side of the house so can't be seen from the garden). I also have a baby audio monitor I could use.

Is it ok to leave her sleeping while I'm in the garden? I read so many posts on here about people leaving baby to sleep whilst they pop to the corner shop and would never do that. I just can't decide whether this is ok though.

Thanks

Why on earth wouldn't it be ok? confused

...........

Because the house could spontaneously combust at given time.

Or

The baby could do an Sndy Pipkin from Little Britain Amanda leap out of the boy whilst op is in the garden and skateboard around the house and accidentally twist their ankle.

Possibly.

We've done this with both DCs, evenings too, we'd be out in the garden with a glass of wine in the summer while they slept upstairs. We have baby monitors. Even as a very nervous first time parent it never occurred to me to worry about that!

Flamingosnbears · 15/04/2019 14:34

For a few minutes fine but it's highly irresponsible to leave a baby for a long time unattended napping or not SIDS can happen at any time yes there are measures to reduce the risk however this is why your child should always be supervised if in doubt call your health visitor.

@Flamingosnbears at 8months? Most babies are in their own rooms overnight from 6months. How do you suggest supervising an 8mo who's sleeping in their own room overnight whilst you're sleeping?

justasking111 · 15/04/2019 14:49

Mine were in the pram under an insect net under a tree, they used to wake up and watch the leaves moving. Mind you they also liked being in a harness on me whilst I cut the grass.

FiresideTreats · 15/04/2019 14:51

Some of these responses are baffling. If you are worried, use a monitor. I wouldn't think twice about going in the garden while my baby was napping in their room.

Every time I think Mumsnet can't get any madder...

It's fine OP, as long as you have a monitor or otherwise know for sure you can hear them. Neither of mine have napped well in buggies so I'm often playing in the garden with DC1 while DC2 naps.

justasking111 · 15/04/2019 15:37

My first baby slept through at 6 weeks 12 hours it was weird, he is still like that. Head down asleep in minutes. To have kept checking on him all night would have been madness.

MyKingdomForBrie · 15/04/2019 15:43

Mine is currently asleep in the car on the drive with all the doors open.. front door is open so I'd hear him though!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 15/04/2019 15:45

Of course! I'd bring the monitor though, it can be surprisingly hard to hear things when you're outside.

Also agree with others, mine always sleep best outside anyway, so keeping her in the buggy is a nice fresh air option too.

allmycats · 15/04/2019 15:52

Is there a reason why baby can't sleep outside in the pram, so quite near to you. In past days it was the norm to put baby to sleep outside in the pram. Fresh air, and if they wake up there is something for them to see, clouds moving, trees etc.

Raspberrytruffle · 15/04/2019 15:53

We bring our monitor outside with us

Supervised? Do you keep watch all night as well?

PacmansGapingMaw · 15/04/2019 16:00

I did this all the time. Sometimes even cracked the top window a notch so I could hear if they woke as the nursery was at the back of the house.

Also fine to let them sleep outside in the garden with you. I used to make nests under the trees with a sheet over a branch like a tent, or under the patio table. Use what you have!

Thirtyrock39 · 15/04/2019 16:04

As a previous poster said you'll hear your baby crying when you're in your garden . You won't need a monitor. Do people really not leave babies to nap in their rooms in peace anymore ?

Poppins2016 · 15/04/2019 16:10

I often leave DS asleep in the house but with a window open so that I can hear him (I'd use a monitor but I still haven't bought one... starting to wonder whether I'll ever bother).

Alternatively he naps in his pushchair in the garden with me.

qazxc · 15/04/2019 16:11

Being out in garden with the baby monitor is fine IMO, you'll be able to hear if she cries.

sighrollseyes · 15/04/2019 16:23

I use the baby monitor and go out in the garden all the time. Monitor works perfectly well in the garden for me.

Even with punctuation, this still wouldn't make any logical sense

pinkpushchairs · 15/04/2019 16:31

@Flamingosnbears you're crazy!

Dothehappydance · 15/04/2019 16:31

I did this all the time.

Do you watch your baby all night?

Caterina99 · 15/04/2019 19:01

I do this all the time. DD is 18months and definitely not one for napping in the buggy. Especially when there’s a perfectly good cot available. DS is nearly 4. Put DD down for a nap, let DS play outside. I can hear her with the monitor even though her room is at the front of the house.

qazxc · 15/04/2019 19:23

SIDS does not happen through lack of supervision of a sleeping child!
