How to budget effectively?

I split with my ex-H just over a year ago and I want to start properly saving for mine and DD's future. I think I probably need a bit of an attitude shift on my spending habits.

What's your best tips for budgeting effectively each month? Using a budget planner app? Using cash for spending? Putting money in savings on pay day?

Any good ideas for how to be a bit more frugal, I suppose!

I have 4 accounts one for bills, exact amount goes in there on payday and it doesn't get touched, bills go out throughout the month.
I have a groceries and house stuff account, I a set amount in every month and I use that to buy food, but also to slowly buy house things, this month I bought some paint and a new kitchen pan in that budget!
A fun account, I send myself a set amount (£100)every month, I sometimes use it to save for items I want or clothes or days out or cinema etc
And a savings account, a set amount goes into that and doesn't get touched apart from to use it what I'm saving for (currently double glazing!)

By having the set amount into each account there's no option to overspend, if I have anything left from groceries account, I put it into the savings account at the end of the month!

Sit down and work out how much you need in bills then of what's left, how much you need for groceries etc and how much you can save per month then set up standing orders to the accounts so you stick to it!
