Hello everyone, I'm new here and a man!
My wife is 25wks pregnant and we were told on the 20th week scan that the BPD is below the 3rd centile and we are really panicking. It's her first child and we've been booked another scan/ appointment with a consultant on Thursday, 20/04/2019. Could someone please help explain and possibly alley my fears. Thanks

Hello, I would imagine she will just have growth scans, this means from 28weeks onwards fortnightly or every four weeks.
My DS1 was 2/5th centile (so for every 100 babies he would be the 2nd-5th smallest). I had growth scans from 28weeks, they essentially just monitor growth and check that they are still growing. There was talk on induction at 37 weeks as his growth slowed down but heartrate was strong so they didn’t. The was 6lb2 at full term... this time around I am consultant lead as my 1st was seen as having SGA (small gestional age) growth scans again from 28 weeks.... its very common so nothing to worry about.

I also saw it as a bonus, some people paid for extra scans..: we got them for free!

Yes very common I needed them for all 3 of mine and birth weights were 6.4, 6.8 and 7.9. All 3 babies at the start were estimated at birth weights between 5lbs and 6lbs. They just like to check they are growing nicely and at a steady rate. I had scans 2 weekly from 24 weeks until the last 4 weeks and then it changed to once a week.

It’s just a precaution. I had to have growth scans and DS was on the small size at 6lbs 5oz but perfectly healthy, 10years later and he’s almost taller than me! Try not to worry.

Thank you all for taking your time to help. God bless.

My DD measured small throughout pregnancy. I was induced at 39 weeks, she was born on 0.4th centile at 5lb 5oz. Perfectly healthy. Now at almost 6 years old, she’s on 91st centile for height and weight so has more than caught up! Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) as as others have said, the fact that there are centiles mean that someones baby needs to be at the bottom. Just make sure you pack tiny baby clothes if baby stays on the 3rd centile curve! Good luck.
