We were out a walk in the woods yesterday and saw this tree which looked beautiful against the mostly green of the forest.

Can someone tell me what it is?

Rhododendron, I think.

Rhododendron, a beautiful import that is sadly a problem in our native woodlands, as it blocks out light to the woodland floor.

When I saw it up in the hills my first thought was Rhododendron but didn't when I was up close for some reason!

It was very striking.

There are loads at Penllergaer Valley woods and Clyne gardens here in Swansea. Different colours as well as that beautiful pink.

They are spectacular. Clyne gardens has over 800 rhododendrons and they are huge and magnificent when in flower.
