So I've been in my new post for just over a month. Just come off a night shift, with another one to go before rest days. Getting ready for bed and I get a text from let's call her 'Jane'. We have several Janes at work, but only one has my number and she's just come on to day shift.

Hi it's Jane I have been trying to call you but signal bad. Im at the hospital after having a fall early morning. Can you try & text me back cos i need a favour x
Me: Hi, caught me before bed, what do you need:

Jane: Can you get me a phone voucher till tomorrow? x

Me: Sorry, off to bed now and I won't be up until 5. I wouldn't even know where to get one. Sorry.

Jane: Oh thanks. I need op and alone.

Me: Which Jane is this?

Because I have no idea who this is and why she is texting me, and why would anyone send a phone voucher, whatever that is, to someone they barely know?

Or is this some sort of scam?

It does sound odd. Does she think you're someone else?

slipperywhensparticus · 14/04/2019 08:02

Did she reply?

Pinkprincess1978 · 14/04/2019 08:03

Sry strange. Do you work in the hospital she is at? She is maybe after a visitors phone voucher and thought you were on shift?

Palominoo · 14/04/2019 08:05

I get scammers on Facebook asking me to send phone tops etc.

Is your phone number displayed anywhere?

Keepaddingpets · 14/04/2019 08:05

It's a well known scam. Don't do anything.

Palominoo · 14/04/2019 08:09

Here’ the scam

Palominoo · 14/04/2019 08:11

Fraudsters are sending out distressing messages to parents in the hope that they will reply and send mobile phone top-up voucher codes.

Victims initially receive a text message from a loved-one which says they are in hospital and that the only way that they can make contact is via text message.

TapasForTwo · 14/04/2019 08:12

Scam. Block the number.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 14/04/2019 08:13

What does OP and alone mean?

Babysharkdoodoodoodo · 14/04/2019 08:14

Thanks. Blocking number now.

Its a scam. I got one of these on xmas day from an 'Emma'. They deliberately use a common name.

BiscuitDrama · 14/04/2019 08:18

I guess it means ‘I need an operation and am alone’, Contessa

AllThatGlistensIs · 14/04/2019 08:23

Definitely a scam, my brother got the same one at Christmas, but also adding in that there’d been a terrible accident and was awaiting surgery. Unfortunately by sheer coincidence the name they used was mine, so I received several very alarmed msgs and voicemails from family members until they got hold of me! (I was completely fine, at home in the shower).

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 14/04/2019 08:56

Ahhh. That is obvious now you say it Biscuit - apologies OP (see, I was reading it as OP rather than op), was being dense!

LIZS · 14/04/2019 09:02

It's a variation of the "had accident/been robbed on holiday" scam. They can clone numbers or just have a lucky guess on name.

BiscuitDrama · 14/04/2019 09:15

That’s what happens when you spend too much time on mumsnet, Contessa Grin
