My teen son has grown over 12" in less than 3 years

We were on holiday in August 2016 when we realised he was the same height as me (he was 12). He's now 15 and 12" taller. I can't keep up with the feeding and don't even start on the clothes ...

Out of interest to those with tall ones - were they always tall in comparison to peers, say at primary?
I am tall as is dh but none of mine are tall! Wondering if they will have a late spurt! (All primary age and one preschool)

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/04/2019 17:58

“What must it be like, to grow upwards so quickly, no wonder they are gangly and awkward for a while.”

I’m convinced super fast growth is the reason DS1 seems to trip over his own feet so often.

TrumpsFerret: yes, DS was tall even as a foetus, he had legs like a frog! Used to boot my hip bones loads!

dementedma · 14/04/2019 18:03

Ds was average size until about 12 but he did gain fat and sideways very quickly. Started growing upwards at 15 and hasnt stopped yet.His best friend is the same age but skinny and probably the shortest in their year. They look funny together

No. They always had larger feet though

cocomelon23 · 14/04/2019 18:16

Did all your tall boys grow outwards before they grew taller?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 14/04/2019 18:16

Mine were both amongst the smallest throughout primary and as toddlers both were tiny but as soon as they got to secondary they went for it. It's a relatively new building so I'm blaming the heating system or something.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 14/04/2019 18:21

Cocomelon yes both of mine go out a bit before they stretch. It's fascinating watching all of these changes. Part of me is marvelling all the time that I held each of them literally in my hand when they were born. (Really small babies - 6.1 and 5.11.)

CMOTDibbler · 14/04/2019 18:22

Mines always been tall. He was born 5 weeks early and people kept asking me if I was sure on my dates (had had very early and multiple scans, so yes) even though he looked early as he was so big. He's tracked the same height percentile all along.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 14/04/2019 18:23

My 12yo DS is 5ft 5 with massive feet.

He always had long, froggy legs, even as a newborn.

Also hairy, with a broken voice.

Still such a child, though!

DeadDoorpost · 14/04/2019 18:23

DB20 grew so fast it caused him to faint and have problems for a few months. Had brain scans, the lot. Turns out his body wasn't coping well with the sudden growth at age 17/18 and couldn't pump the blood round his body fast enough. He fainted several times because of it. He even had the top neurosurgeon in the country take a look just to make sure.
As it is, he's fine now, but he gave them several frights when in hospital as his heart rate was so low. Naturally was beating at 50bpm and would lower as he tried to sleep. The machine would go off every time. He was very active, very healthy, and the Drs found it really odd.

TrumpsFerret · 14/04/2019 18:30

@brizzlemint interesting, as mine are about 60-75 centile but have what I think are big feet. 8 year old in an adult size 5 and 6 year old in a size 2. That's pretty large isn't it?!

brizzlemint · 14/04/2019 18:31

Did all your tall boys grow outwards before they grew taller?

No, mine resembles a stick insect.

tartoeps · 14/04/2019 18:33

Are there no tiny ones around here?

brizzlemint · 14/04/2019 18:34

@trumpsferret one of mine was an adult size 8 when he was age 8 and the other was an infant size 8 when he started walking. The other, the short one (!) was an infant size 4 when first walking and is now only a size 6.

doctorboo · 14/04/2019 18:45

My DH is 6’2”, BIL (his brother) was 6’4” when last measured, but is now 22 so not sure he’ll grow any more? I’m 5ft so hugs from him are always funny to me.

7yo DS is 143cm, wears size 4 shoes and is in age 10-11 clothes.

5yo DS is 117cm, size 13 shoes, age 6 clothes.

3yo DS is 103cm, size 9 shoes and age 3-4 clothes.

HoneyDragon · 14/04/2019 19:14

trumpsferret my ds was always the smallest in his year throughout primary and up until year 8. Then he simply shot up and his voice broke and was one of the tallest in the year.

JockTamsonsBairns · 14/04/2019 19:38

@tartoeps mine are tiny!
Ds1 is 21, and just 5'6" with size 7 feet. Ds2 is nearly 12, and only 137cm. I'm from a family of shortarses though, so it's not surprising really. It doesn't seem to bother ds1 at all, but I know ds2 wishes he was taller. He's extremely skinny too, which also bothers him.
It worries me a bit, hearing that this generation are going to be 'giants'. My poor wee boy Sad

dementedma · 14/04/2019 19:44

don't worry jock. as i mentioned earlier DS's best friend is really petit and although in 6th year, not much bigger than some of the second years. he also happens to be the most talented musician I think any of us have ever known, including the music department, and is definitely the cool kid that everyone wants to be friends with! Ds looks like his bodyguard. Smile

ContinuityError · 14/04/2019 19:49

cocomelon23 mine get slightly chubby round the middle and then stretch upwards.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/04/2019 22:05

I marvel at all this, it’s nearly the same same miraculous feeling you get when you realise you just gave birth to a real life other human! Amazing, growing life!

I wonder if the equivalent with daughters is seeing them pregnant themselves. Circle of life and all that..

Think I’ve had too much wine and I’ve gone all gooey....

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 14/04/2019 22:13

This terrifies me. My 3yo and 1yo old boys are big for their ages and both already eat a ridiculous amount (nursery often report that they have had multiple servings). Dh is 6’3 so it’s not unsurprising but I live in fear of how much it will cost me to feed them as teenagers!

YonWeeLassie · 14/04/2019 22:17

I had two of these now adults.
Do remember that growth takes a bit of a toll on them. Their brains struggle to keep up, they are clumsy and need lots of food and sleep.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 14/04/2019 22:28

I think ds is about to shoot up. He's a weeping, tantrumming mess and he's growing great dane paws. His hands always get huge before the rest of him catches up.

ExCwmbranDweller · 14/04/2019 22:45

Trumps I had one who was always amongst the tallest and one who was always one of the smallest, tall one is 6' 1" now and tiny one 6'. There appears to be no logic. Small one is skinny as hell though and always has been, never an ounce of fat on him his entire life

CalmConfident · 15/04/2019 03:23

Another giant food destroying man-child here. DS12 is tall and broad, eats everything in sight, size 10 feet. He goes taller then fills out again...DS10 goes a bit podgy then the height follows.
