My teen son has grown over 12" in less than 3 years

We were on holiday in August 2016 when we realised he was the same height as me (he was 12). He's now 15 and 12" taller. I can't keep up with the feeding and don't even start on the clothes ...

DS1 is 16 and a size 13 shoe.

School shoes are hideously expensive (but last) and for social wear, we just get the same trainers (online) again and again when they get holey.

DS2 is 14 and size 11, hoping he won't grow any more.

DD is 11, now in age 14 clothes as she has suddenly grown lots. Hopefully she will stay in these for a fair bit now.

We buy at least 20 pints of milk a week Shock

InABigCountry · 13/04/2019 22:51

I'm hoping that my DD 11 and DS 9 will be taller than me- I'm 5 foot 1 inch. DH is around 5 foot 10 so hopefully they will be closer to him? There are worse things though than being small! Grin

Girliefriendlikescake · 13/04/2019 22:52

It's not just boys, my teen dd has shot up in the last 6 months, her uncle commented on how much she's grown since Christmas. I'm 5ft 7in and she's about eye level to me now at 13yo!

She eats well but I don't think as much as teen boys, my friends teen son is never full!!

My two have grown relatively early which means ending up slightly shorter than expected. 5'8" ish for DD makes her the little one in our family ... DS went into size 11 just after he turned 12 and I had visions of shoe size = age being imminent - but 18 months later he's still an 11 for normal shoes, though 12 for trainers, and I think his feet have stopped. He was "nearly" as tall as me by the end of last summer term, still 12, and again doesn't seem to have grown a lot more. If he does stay at 6' he'll have some adjusting to do as his friends catch up and pass him! I'd always assumed he'd be taller than his ~6'3" father (based on my height centile being more extreme) but that is looking less likely now.

Catchingbentcoppers · 13/04/2019 22:58

I'm 5ft 2 and my just turned 15 year old has shot up the last 18 months. He's 5'10 now and I reckon has a bit to go. DD is 12 and 5'6 already.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 13/04/2019 22:58

Ah bless you, just. No one wants people to be biased against their child so your feelings are entirely natural! I'm sure you let him know all the time that he is brilliant and as long as he has a sense of confidence in himself this will take him far. I think that's the secret of my ladykilling mate - don't get me wrong, he's not an asshole or a pest: he just has this attitude of "I am worth your attention".

Catchingbentcoppers · 13/04/2019 23:00

my friends teen son is never full!! Nor is DS, he's constantly stuffing his face!

hmwhatsmynameagain · 13/04/2019 23:12

Oh ad pp says the stretch marks on the back didn't expect that

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/04/2019 23:12

It is weird to see the growth spurts in teenage boys. Plus the food consumption to match. Canoe shoes in our house too, it looks like a clown’s dressing room in our hall with DS and DH’s shoes lined up. DS also got the stretch marks across the middle of his back (now THEY were shocking to see for the first time! Had to google!)

Interesting to see others say that this generation are going to be giants because I was at an event recently in the foyer of an arena. Mostly late teens/20s people. I was like a midget, they were all towering over me, I couldn’t believe it. And I’m 5 ft 6 so not exactly tiny for a woman.

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/04/2019 23:21

yy it is funny. And the baby overtopping one is bittersweet.

All mine pat my head kindly

Ds has stretch marks on his side snd tummy, really bad ones. He piled on weight as a young teen and grew outwards before beginning to climb upwards. They are now pretty much hidden as rhe next stage in this transformation seems to be the gorilla one. I hope his future partner likes a furry chap!

Streely · 14/04/2019 15:09

14 yr old DS is a big furry bear. Seemed to happen overnight. Hairy everywhere and full-on moustache. His voice has also broken.

He’s still such a child, though! I cant quite believe this giant fur ball is my baby boy.

Radioactivespider · 14/04/2019 15:44

My DS1 looks like he is heading the same way as the young men further up the thread. He is only 9 and is nearly as tall as me. I do not know how tall he will end up, but his uncle is 6ft 5.

DS2 looks like he will be lucky to reach 5ft 6. I remember someone on a similar thread to this one saying that her sons look like Del Boy and Rodney. I think mine might look a bit like that too.

8misskitty8 · 14/04/2019 16:10

Dd2 is 11 and was always the smallest in her class. She was a 6lb full term baby and her clothes have always been a smaller size or 2.
But when she turned 10 she grew 6 inches in a month and hasn’t stopped growing.

Last time she was measured she was 5’2” and she’s grown a bit since then. She is the tallest girl in her class and by a big margin. Her best friend is barely at her shoulders. Clothes hardly last any time before they are too small.

I’m 5’6 and Dh is 6 foot so although above average we’re not unusually tall.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 14/04/2019 16:23

8misskitty8 my best friend was an actual giant at 1...she was 5ft 2 like your dd. She's now 40 and 5ft 3 Grin

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 14/04/2019 16:23

Sigh, 11, not 1. She definitely wasn't 5ft 2 at a year old.

underneaththeash · 14/04/2019 16:26

My 12 year old is 5’9” and has size 12 feet! Luckily his feet have slowed down.

OublietteBravo · 14/04/2019 16:30

My 13 year old DS is still tiny - only 145 cm. I really hope he does some growing soon.

RoseDog · 14/04/2019 16:30

My 13yo DS is 6ft and shows no sign of stopping growing!!

He eats everything and wears medium mans clothes, he has never had an ounce of fat on him, he never done the filling out before shooting up like DD did, he is now starting to get more manly looking in his jaw and shoulders though!

Hoppinggreen · 14/04/2019 16:32

My 10 year old has size 7 feet and his head reaches my eye level, I think I’ve got all this to look forwards to

HoneyDragon · 14/04/2019 16:52

15 yo here too. I had a little moment today. I’d moved furniture around and noticed I’d caught a hair band in the dresser so called him through and said if I lift can you pull.

He looked at me like this HmmConfused
said you pull I’ll lift and lifted the dresser with everything in it without any effort whatsoever. I am strong for my size and could barely raise it 5mm he cleared 3” from the floor with zero effort.Blush

Echobelly · 14/04/2019 16:54

My brother did something like that - he was tiny until he was 14 and then in about 2 years shot up to average height.

DD (10) has grown loads this year - already way taller than me at 12!

tartoeps · 14/04/2019 17:31

There are not only giants around !

Ds is 16 and only 4ft7... My best friends 10 yo dd is quite a bit bigger than him!

I hope he grows soon because it is not easy for him being so much smaller than his peers. He is diagnosed with constitutional growth delay, so he should grow longer. Let's hope!

ContinuityError · 14/04/2019 17:41

I think my DS1, now 21, grew widthways more than up - he’s 6’0” and probably should have been a bit taller, but he’s so wide. He lifts stupidly heavy weights and can inhale the contents of the fridge. Costs a fortune Hmm

DS2 at 14 is now taller than me, and fools my sister when she rings as his voice is so deep he sounds like his dad (well a Scottish version of his dad).

ExCwmbranDweller · 14/04/2019 17:49

DS2 looked at me with sorrow a couple of months ago and said "why can I never feel full?" after destroying two huge snacks and fish and chips. I think we now know he was converting food into height at great speed.

What must it be like, to grow upwards so quickly, no wonder they are gangly and awkward for a while.
