Anyone seen The Book of Mormon? What did you think?

Hi,

Dp really wants to see this, so I'm thinking of taking them for their birthday.

I'm expecting it to be a bit close to the mark, but is it actually good? Be interested to hear some reviews.

Also, the seating is confusing me. It's in the Prince of Wales theatre and I've not been before. There are some (apparently) good seats available at the front of the circle. Is this the same as the balcony?

TIA

It is very funny and yes VERY close to the mark, don't go if your DP are easily offended

Mediumsizeddancer · 12/04/2019 12:58

Very very close to the mark, but also very clever and funny. Excellent songs too.

Milicentbystander72 · 12/04/2019 12:59

I went to see it about 5 years ago. I loved it. Very close to the mark, uses language and vocabulary I never thought I'd tear in a musical. It's funny, moving and thought provoking really. Songs are great.

It all depends on what you mean by 'good'. My idea might be widely different to yours. When I went they did get a standing ovation though.

Don't go if your deeply religious and hold all your beliefs dear.

Sorry, I can't help with the seating as I can't remember.

I’m going in August! I’m already looking forward to it!

RunningLondon · 12/04/2019 13:00

It’s bloody brilliant! We saw it in New York. Definitely worth it

ShirleyPhallus · 12/04/2019 13:01

It is excellent, the songs are fantastic and very entertaining

I do think some of the humour wore a little thin towards the end so don’t go if you’r easily offended or very religious!

EmpressJewel · 12/04/2019 13:02

Ooo, I'm pleased I've seen this thread as I was going to book tickets!

greenelephantscarf · 12/04/2019 13:05

it's very funny
but very rude in parts.

not at all like south park if you liked/disliked the cartoon.

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 13:08

It's so, so funny. I saw it several years ago and we are going again later in the year when its on tour (now the kids are old enough to see it.

It is so near the knuckle you will gasp and say how can they say that. If you are a fan of musicals you can play spot the pastiche.

I've sat in the circle twice in the Prince of Wales once for Mamma Mia on the very front row and further back for Mormon. If you go on theatremonkey and Seat plan you can look at seat reviews. You don;t want to sit somewhere where the overhang will block the spinning Jesus and if you are too far to the side you miss some stuff stage right mostly.

I spent a lot of time as I wanted good seats but not at the premium price. We sat in the circle in Row E right in the Centre and they were brilliant seats. On a random Friday in April Roc C is £92 but rows D & E are £60 so quite a difference for just one or two rows further behind.

Its best and cheapest to book direct through the thebookofmormonmusical.com/london/tickets/?configId=c20ad4d7#seatmap website If you google ticketmaster and ogther agencies come up but their seats are mucj more expensive with booking fees.

Thanks for all your replies!

Oh, dp isn't easily offended at all, so not worried about that.

Come from, thanks for all that. So is circle like the balcony then? Just seen some, three rows back in the circle in the middle. Would they be good?..

Anyone seen The Book of Mormon? What did you think?
OllyBJolly · 12/04/2019 13:27

Only me then....

Thought it was puerile nonsense - some of it pretty misogynistic. If we weren't packed in so tightl I'd have left the theatre. But I have friends who tell me they loved it.

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 13:27

Yes, the circle is the first balcony (think there is only one a POW. Sometimes called the Dress Circle. Personally I'd go the fourth row back as they are usually cheaper than the third row for pretty much the same view.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 12/04/2019 13:27

I've seen it twice. Great fun, but very rude, very sweary and not for those who are easily offended by anything religious or sexual (eg there are references to baby rape...)

Cookiedoughforbreakfast · 12/04/2019 13:37

Avacados, yes, I'd read that and I was a bit worried. What do you mean by reference to? Is it more than once?

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 13:39

There are about 3 references but each time the characters treat it with shock and go to extreme lengths to debunk the myth that it will cure AIDS

Cookiedoughforbreakfast · 12/04/2019 13:42

Ok, but nothing is actually implied or simulated? Just discussed?

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 13:44

Yes just discussed. I don’t want to post spoilers but a character says that he’s heard that it cures AIDS & he might try it the Mormons are shocked and one of them makes up a comical story to debunk the myth.

Cookiedoughforbreakfast · 12/04/2019 13:46

Ah, ok. Thanks for that. Was starting to have a rethink.

WhatHaveIFound · 12/04/2019 13:49

I saw it in London last year and it was fantastic. So much so that i'm going to see it again in Manchester in June. This time i'm taking my teen DC!

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 13:56

Me too but I’ve chosen a really bad weekend in Manchester with Parklife & Muse.

Virginiaplain1 · 12/04/2019 14:13

Me too OllybeJolly. I saw it last night with OH and we both thought that it was pretty offensive in parts - and we are both very broad minded. As OH said on the way home, if it had been mocking other religions, rather than Mormons, the reviews would have been different. I wasn't very happy about the stereotypical portrayal of the African characters. Perhaps we just didn't get the joke, as the vast majority of the audience loved it.

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 12/04/2019 14:22

Saw it and loved it. I’ve got a broad sense of humour and was fully expecting it to be close to the bone but I wasn’t prepared for the reality of how truly awful (in a good way) it was.

Lungelady · 12/04/2019 14:24

Great fun right from the first song.
