Anyone seen The Book of Mormon? What did you think?

Hi,

Dp really wants to see this, so I'm thinking of taking them for their birthday.

I'm expecting it to be a bit close to the mark, but is it actually good? Be interested to hear some reviews.

Also, the seating is confusing me. It's in the Prince of Wales theatre and I've not been before. There are some (apparently) good seats available at the front of the circle. Is this the same as the balcony?

TIA

The baby rape thing is true though, some people in the world do ‘believe if you sleep with a virgin then you will be cured of aids but we have run out of virgins so they turned to babies’.

There’s a song in it which the writers say is the funniest one, it’s just the Mormon singing about what he believes, and 100% of it is true inthat faith.

The most shocking for some is the ‘fuck god in the cunt’ song, which some people find very offensive but then it’s meant to seem offensive to those who have an ‘easy’ life and who don’t suffer under god like the villagers do

It's brilliant!
Soundtrack is on Spotify.

jackparlabane · 12/04/2019 15:47

Is it similar humour to Jerry Springer: the Opera?

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 15:56

I’d say no. I didn’t find Jerry Springer funny.

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 15:57

BOM has to have the funniest EVER closing line (we have the script).

AppleKatie · 12/04/2019 15:58

It goes out of its way to shock. It is funny (imo) but once you’ve turned off the bit of your brain that gets shocked/offended (because really there’s no point in taking offence at a show which is so obviously just testing out the limits of what theatregoers will stand) you’re left with some good songs but a fairly weak plot.

underneaththeash · 12/04/2019 16:36

I did like Jerry Springer (and South Park), but didn’t like Book of Mormon at all.

I don’t think people dying in extreme poverty of curable health conditions should be something that’s part of a west end musical. Even in a satirical way.

puppymouse · 12/04/2019 17:21

One of the best shows I've ever seen but not for the easily offended.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/04/2019 18:24

I found it really funny.

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2019 18:54

I was very dubious about it for some of the reasons listed above. Plus it was a massive hassle for us to get to and cost a small fortune for a babysitter etc etc.
I laughed like a drain. We felt it was the best night out we'd had in years and swore we'd go to the theatre more often as a result - which we have actually done.

Trying81 · 12/04/2019 20:39

Saw it in NYC with my musical hating DP and we both loved it.

The songs are clever, lean heavily on other popular musicals - You and me (mostly me) / defying gravity from wicked was the most obvious imo.

It is offensive, but they do mock most religions in it - and it’s very close to the line at times, but to be expected by the writers.

AlbertWinestein · 12/04/2019 20:46

I hated it and am not easily offended at all. I thought it was extremely offensive towards the African people and just plain dumb.

BlueSkiesLies · 12/04/2019 20:51

It’s unbelievable good. It’s the best example of musical theatre you will ever find, and the comedy and humour is exceedingly close to the bone (as you would expect from the creators)

Youwanapizzame · 12/04/2019 21:08

Fucking HILARIOUS! I went at 34 weeks with twins and nearly had them...

Youwanapizzame · 12/04/2019 21:09

Very rude and very funny

EmperorBallpitine · 12/04/2019 21:11

It is the rudest thing I've ever seen and I loved it!

missyB1 · 12/04/2019 21:13

I think it’s a marmite thing. Everyone I know has loved it or absolutely hated it. One of my friends who is very broad minded hated it, but more because she felt it was just silly and embarrassing.

LizzieSiddal · 12/04/2019 21:15

Only me then....
Thought it was puerile nonsense - some of it pretty misogynistic.

No not just you, I hated it too and Dh and I left during the interval. I wasn’t that interested in finding out whether they were going to attack a village inorder to rape all the young girls and women.

I don’t find that kind of thing very funny.

pineapplebryanbrown · 12/04/2019 21:22

I wasn't offended and enjoyed the music but i thought it was very lazy comedy - like a little boy with a wee wee poo poo joke.

NotMyPuppy · 12/04/2019 21:26

I thought it was hilarious, and the songs really catchy. It relies on shock value, but I’ve seen it 3 times and loved it every time!

daisydreaming interesting the writers think “I believe” is the funniest, i sort of agree because the satire is very clever - not just on Mormonism but quite subtly against religion more generally as some more common beliefs eg God has a plan for all of us are included.

willyougobacktobed · 12/04/2019 21:28

Seen it 5 times: bloody brilliant. The music is unparalleled and if you have as much disdain for organized religion as me you'll think it's excellent

willyougobacktobed · 12/04/2019 21:30

Exactly @NotMyPuppy - I think it's more a take on all organized religions rather than just Mormonism

Echobelly · 12/04/2019 21:30

It wasn't quite as hilarious as I heard, but still a lot of fun. Some of risque humour is risking going a little far into insensitive - you have to be careful with the kind of 'Ah, but we're satirising racist stereotypes' thing.

Pinkarsedfly · 12/04/2019 21:34

I adored it. DP and I loved it so much we went back and took the teenagers.

Filthy, funny, wise and good hearted.

2rachtint · 12/04/2019 21:44

My husband and I loved it! Hello and Turn it off were my favourites
