Weird phobias anyone?

Mewithane · 12/04/2019 11:58

I wanted to see if I am alone in this, as my friends and family think I'm mental, but I have an awful fear of......

BUTTONS!!

Even typing it like that makes me cringe. I can't wear them, touch them, be in the room with them! DD and DS cannot have clothes with them on. If there is one on the loose I will leave the house and not return until it is dealt with.

(note: only clothes buttons that need threading are terrifying. Remote control buttons, push buttons etc are all fine.)

Is this a real thing? Has anyone else got any weird phobias they want to get off their chest?

Penguins.... they worry me alot

littlebillie · 12/04/2019 23:13

I have never met any one who had this Anatidaephobia - fear of being watched by a duck

phobiafreak · 12/04/2019 23:15

Nc for this because everyone I know takes the piss out of me for this.

Toast.

The word makes my hair and arms feel all funny. Makes me want to shower.

littlebillie · 12/04/2019 23:23

trigger warning

I was just reading about buttons, it's very common. The film Coraline in Germany had warning over "buttons for eyes." It must have been a scary film to watch

Mookie81 · 12/04/2019 23:25

It takes a special kind of cunt to post a picture of a known phobia in a thread about phobias. AngrySad

Bunnylady53 · 12/04/2019 23:28

I don’t have a hole phobia but I really don’t feel comfortable looking at those pics!

SamBaileys · 12/04/2019 23:32

Drains in swimming pools.

Holes are darkness and unknown probably more survival instinct. I always feel queasy over very deep water as it's the unknown that lies below...

Public toilets

golddustwomen · 12/04/2019 23:46

People clicking their fingers, makes me sick to my stomach!

Shopperami · 12/04/2019 23:56

Hot air balloons.
Bouncy castles.
Wind turbines.

Jakadaal · 13/04/2019 00:11

Tortoises/turtles swift followed by lizards, snakes etc 🤢🤢 can't even touch the remote if one appears on tv

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/04/2019 00:57

Cotton wool buds (out of their tub)
The word figure.

Itsagrandoldteam · 13/04/2019 01:03

Not me but my friend is scared of wind turbines, good job she doesn't live with my in-laws, their house looks out to sea, where there are hundreds.

MyCatIsAPsychopath · 13/04/2019 01:10

Cotton wool makes me feel sick to my stomach. I can’t touch it or be in the room with someone pulling it apart.

PhalangeReginaPhalange · 13/04/2019 01:44

Holes!!! Wish I’d not seen that pic argh

Lamps. I get palpitations walking through the lighting section of Ikea. It’s the small and medium ones with the basic shades I can’t deal with and when there are loads of them all in one place shudder

purplepears · 13/04/2019 03:49

Cooked eggs.
Really worry and upset me. If I smell them also it has me shaking. It's a very bad phobia.
I have to (often subtly) avoid situations. Things like breakfast in a hotel is a nightmare. Cannot do a buffet breakfast as it's so stressful.
People think it's ridiculous and funny and always want to question me, or take the piss. Or send me pictures. I also think it's ridiculous and have no idea why I have it.

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 13/04/2019 08:07

Minkies11

I came on to say chimpanzees! I hate them. I feel sick just looking at or thinking about them. And most other primates. Dislike monkeys too, creepy little things.
Strangely enough, I quite like gorillas and orangutans!

I also gag at hippos and wildebeest. I mean, what the flip even is a wildebeest? Is it a cow or a deer? (Don’t answer, I don’t care)

I also have a huge fear of pylons. They are terrifying.

CandyflossKid · 13/04/2019 08:18

I have identical twin boys - one has a phobia of buttons and has done since he was a baby. Getting him to wear anything with buttons on was a nightmare.
His brother has a bizarre phobia of belly buttons - he literally gags if he sees anyone touching their belly button.

clandestinenetwork · 13/04/2019 08:24

I also gag at hippos and wildebeest.

I don't like seeing people with their mouth covered, such as by a cold mask (I'm glad they're not often worn in England). I don't mind seeing a mouth covered with a hand, unless it's that wide-eyed moment of someone realising they said something they shouldn't have said, and they hold it there for a bit too long.

I used to be utterly fearful of the lotion used to treat head lice, because it had a really strong smell. I would freak out and cry, and I wished my parents had never read the advice "please treat all the family" when someone else had it, and I didn't. Especially as once I had it, and nobody else got treated, not fair!

Mewithane · 13/04/2019 09:22

These are incredible, how strange how we can be so utterly terrified of things we know in our minds cannot hurt us, yet our brain just goes "nope"!

Littlebillie Fear of being watched by a duck - I'd love to know why there is a name for this fear and meet someone who has this - that's the most illogical one yet!

Not afraid of heights themselves but afraid of things falling from my/DH's/DD's grasp from a great height.

No problem with going on the Chicago skyscraper glass floor and 'tilt' attractions, did the Sydney Bridge climb, abseiling and tandem sky jumping. Those are fine because I'm secure and not holding onto to anything that could fall out of my hands / off my head (mobile, sunglasses, piece of tissue).

But for example when up on a high church tower, and DH takes his mobile out to take a photo, I feel sick thinking about it falling off the edge of the railing. It's not the potential damage or loss of the item, just the actual possibility of it falling.
