Can you put one arm over your shoulder

... And touch fingers with your other hand coming up diagonally from below?

I have never been able to do this, regardless of my size or fitness. Otoh elderly mil can easily do it.

Which is more common?

I’m still convinced it’s go do with limb length

Ex had arms like a T-Rex

I'm very fat, I have short arms, I am as fit as a tub of lard, I have never done yoga, and yes I can.

My back is always clean and no itch is unreachable. Which is lucky because otherwise I'd have to Baloo-the-Bear it whenever I needed a good scratch.

Palominoo · 12/04/2019 08:57

Yes, but as I can’t see any necessity for doing so then stop worrying about it.

Save your time for more important things such as trying to touch your nose with your tongue.

Mememeplease · 12/04/2019 09:49

I definitely can't touch my nose with my tongue Sad

Perhaps the fact that my daughter could wipe her own bottom from nearly three and my ds was still struggling to reach at 5, also might be to do with the shoulder flexibility then lowers tone of discussion It really did look as if his arms weren't long enough. I'll have to ask him, if he can reach his fingers now.

I can one way but not the other.

HavelockVetinari · 12/04/2019 09:53

Yes, and can hold hands both ways. Don't think I'm hypermobile though, I can't do the splits or anything.

Camomila · 12/04/2019 09:55

Yep. I can hold hands both sides.

I’m hyper mobile though, as is DM, and so was her mum. My Nonna wasn’t still going to exercise classes and sitting cross legged on the floor in her mid 80s, and DM is still better than me at yoga (mid 60s though). I can do the splits though :)

Camomila · 12/04/2019 09:58

Aah maybe DS will be hypermobile too, he could also wipe his bottom from younger than 3 and I was always a bit confused why other DC struggled. He also walked later than average and found it easier with shoes.

I think my family are all just unnaturally bendy Grin

Bezalelle · 12/04/2019 10:00

I can do it with my right hand reaching over/down and my left hand reaching under/up, but not the other way around! I'm quite flexible after a few years of yoda.

Bezalelle · 12/04/2019 10:01

Yoga.

Ahem.

chesterfuckingdraws · 12/04/2019 10:06

Yes on both sides.

I have freakishly bendy arms and elbows which get a lot of comments, just the other day at work I was asked to show the new girl my "weird arms" Grin

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/04/2019 10:07

I can. Hands not quite flat on floor but almost. Can get my feet behind my neck and do the splits. My fingers end backwards if I straighten them, and when playing the violin I used to have to concentrate to keep them straight on the neck and not bent like a backwards c. I can also touch my forearm with my thumbs bent down.

I'm not hypermobile though.

Mememeplease · 12/04/2019 10:16

Just asked ds about touching his fingers and he is miles away. No where near touching. He is super fit and sporty though, so it must be shoulder flexibility or arm length, but given that several posters have said that they can do it with one arm but not the other, I suspect it's not arm length -unless arms are like boobs and uneven lengths. I suspect we would have noticed a multitude of people walking around with different length arms Grin

CherryBlossom23 · 12/04/2019 10:18

I can do it on one side (just about) but not other because I have a dodgy shoulder. I think it is related to shoulder flexibility because I was able to do it better when I was younger.

isthismylifenow · 12/04/2019 10:20

I can only do it with right arm over shoulder but not the left.

Why?

And why have i only realized this now.

joggingon · 12/04/2019 10:22

Get a yoga strap. Hold it between the 2 hands. Pull/ stretch 1 min each side. You will be able to do it eventually

Mememeplease · 12/04/2019 10:23

If you are right handed then I suppose you flex your right shoulder more as you use it more?

In the toilet deptartment, I need to ask DD if she can do it, because based on that theory then she should be able to touch her fingers, or at least get closer than DS. She won't be home til later though.

Astrid0208 · 12/04/2019 10:24

Yes but I'm hyper mobile. I'm pretty unfit so I think it's to do with the shoulder joint rather than fitness.

Drookit · 12/04/2019 10:25

Can do it with right arm up but not the other side. How odd.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 12/04/2019 10:26

Yes, with my right arm over the top, and I could hook my fingers together. It took a while though. Nowhere near with my left arm!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 12/04/2019 10:36

I can - both sides with overlap

jackparlabane · 12/04/2019 10:39

Only after an hour of aerobics so I've loosened all the muscles. Otherwise hands are a good 6 in apart.

BarryTheKestrel · 12/04/2019 10:41

Right arm over the top I can, left hand over the top I can't. My right arm is my dominant arm so that makes sense to me.

Silversun83 · 12/04/2019 10:43

Yes, can hold hands both ways. But as PP say, it's nothing to do with fitness and all to do with flexibility. I'm also hypermobile, particularly upper body and back. My arms aren't particularly long, so probably less to do with that!
