Recommend an unusual doll or soft toy for 1 year old niece

My brother in law is doing me a huge favour and I'd like to take my niece a gift. I'm looking for an unusual doll or soft toy suitable for a one year old. Preferably something that can be washed I think.

TIA

What is your definition of unusual?
Non normal coloured animal like a blue hamster, something you don't normally find in soft toy form like the soft toy viruses or something that is rare/limited edition?

thirdfiddle · 12/04/2019 01:14

Soft toy viruses are pretty cool Grin Or any particular interests or favourite characters you could match to? Or something connected to her parents' interests or careers? Or Lanka kade doll matched to her hair/skin colouring?

Batsypatsy · 12/04/2019 01:28

I'm not sure Blush I just wanted something unusual for the family who have everything and are quite "picky" for want of a better word. Something traditional. No special interests, not a tv watcher. Mother is an artist, if that helps.

Corelle dolls are lovely. Scented.

ca.cuddleandkind.com/collections/hand-knit-dolls
for some odd reason these come up on my newsfeed.
proceeds go to a charity to feed children and they are crafted in a fair trade sustainable way.

Batsypatsy · 12/04/2019 01:50

That's a good idea, I'll have a look.

Jellycat do really unusual soft toy animals (e.g. sloth, octopus, etc).

How about a "Harrods" soft teddy bear?

LoversLane · 12/04/2019 02:24

I got my god daughter a double doll for her first birthday (not sure of the correct name). It was Cinderella and on one side is her in her house dress turn her inside out and she is in a ball gown. She was a very girly little girl and it was a beautiful hand made rag doll.

MarinaMarinara · 12/04/2019 02:42

My daughter has one like this - ethical.market/handmade-traditional-rag-doll-dad-multi-ethnic-plush-doll.html which comes in a range of skin and hair colours, and it’s nice to have a boy doll, but there is also a girl version (or you could get the pair depending on what you’d like to spend).

Or how about a lovely lizard? ethical.market/handmade-barefoot-frilly-neck-lizard-eco-friendly-soft-toy.html

Jellycat toys are very nice too, DD has a super ballerina swan www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/d6996.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4r7A2bTJ4QIVzpPtCh0CXwc6EAQYASABEgKx6vD_BwE

or they do a choice of fab flamingos www.fleurtations.uk.com/Jellycat/Jellycat-Flora-Flamingo.asp?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhvig7rXJ4QIVQbHtCh3z-wX6EAQYASABEgLuwfD_BwE

Or how about a knitted dinosaur? www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/best-years-knitted-triceratops-rattle-d9395.html

Bitchywaitress · 12/04/2019 02:45

I second Jellycat! And they are so soft.

BelulahBlanca · 12/04/2019 03:37

My sister had a Cinderella doll made for me and I cherish it!

Yalltroll · 12/04/2019 05:46

Notonthehighstreet has some personalised options, eg a rag doll where you choose the features and then the clothes have your niece’s name (or other message) sewn on. There are other soft toys you can personalise too.

OR - although it’s not what you asked for, it’s worth remembering for another gift like Christmas - the Terramundi money lots are really beautiful and come in so many colours, again with name or other message painted on. They are the clay moneypots that the child/her family fill and when it’s finally full, they’ve smash it and get all the cash for spending!

JHaniver · 12/04/2019 05:50

The Kathe Kruse Nicki Baby dolls are soft and easy for babies to clutch, and very cute.

There is a shop near us Mr Wolfs toy shop it is amazing and has loads of unusual things I'm pretty sure you can stop online but if you are local to Newcastle or Hexham I'd recommend a visit

reefedsail · 12/04/2019 06:36

What about a puppet? Her parents can make it 'work' for her which they love at that age. We had a lovely mouse who was just as good as a soft toy or puppet.

www.thepuppetcompany.com/ There are some great ones at The Puppet Company.

Connieston · 12/04/2019 06:39

Sophie giraffe is a classic, although at 1 might be past the teething chewy stage. Still nice though.

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2019 06:40

Pinkyminky.com is an artist who makes the most beautiful, detailed cat dolls including handmade clothes. They're too lovely for a 1yo but could be displayed till older.
