So my dad has a 14 year old dog who’s not very well. It’s quite touch and go and I think soon my dad my need to make the decision to put him down. He’s quite a rational person so he’s prepared for this (although it breaks me heart to think of my dad being alone againSad).
However my ds is 2.5 and really quite attached to this dog, he sees him a couple of times a week.
What would you tell him if the worst was to happen?
I feel like I need to just explain to him (in around about way) about how people/animals die but I don’t want to scare him.
I don’t want to just lie and say that the dogs gone to the farm or something.
How would you word it?

Just say that he got poorly, went to sleep and won’t wake up. He has gone to “doggy heaven” if you like.
I think that is age appropriate.

Don't use 'gone to sleep' unless you want to terrify your ds witless at bedtimes.
