Would you have wanted to be the Pope? If it was open to women?

Just that really.

I think an even bigger barrier would be my atheism.

AnnieOH1 · 11/04/2019 13:06

As far as my faith goes I don't believe that women have ever held the priesthood to allow it to happen, but I equally believe women have been erased and sidelined by the church through the ages which I don't believe would have happened if there has been women leaders. :/

groundcontroltomontydon · 11/04/2019 13:42

I'd only be in it for the hats

Brahumbug · 11/04/2019 13:44

Hats an some nifty dressesGrin

minmooch · 11/04/2019 13:51

And the ring!

DeadWife · 11/04/2019 13:51

Only in the time of the Borgias.

MaidenMotherCrone · 11/04/2019 14:31

I couldn't cope with people wanting to kiss my ring and then there's the whole number 1 god thing and peddling lies.

I'd jump at the chance of being Ronald Hutton though. Or AC Grayling.

kaytee87 · 11/04/2019 14:40

Would it be open to Presbyterians too?

(That's a no, btw Wink)

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/04/2019 14:50

I actually did want to be the Pope as a child.

Then I discovered that nuns weren't actually equal to priests (we had both in our parish and as a small child I thought they were all the same, just our priest was the one that got promoted). Then when I was 8 and wanted to be an altar server I was told I couldn't even be that because I was a girl.

But yes, the hats and dresses are fab.
And quite fancy being one of the most powerful people in the world.

mummmy2017 · 11/04/2019 14:51

A woman was Pope ..
This is why they have a chair the Sedia Stercoraria . It has a hole in it, long ago the new Pope had to sit on the chair and a young cardinal had to have a look and shout. ..... big balls....
No matter how Rome says it is not true, they had the test for a reason

MockerstheFeManist · 11/04/2019 15:01

Shirly a female pope would be a mope?

groundcontroltomontydon · 11/04/2019 15:02

I wouldn't get the gig. I'm rubbish at competency-based interviews. I'd never be able to describe transubstantiation using the STAR method.

BigBooBoo · 11/04/2019 15:04

What does mummy work as? "My mummy is the pope" GrinGrinGrin

BentCoppers · 11/04/2019 16:57

Yes the like the hat. I find the Popemobile a bit naff though, I think I’d change it.

No way. A friend of mine is an archbishop and it's a terrible job. Nice vestments though!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/04/2019 18:25

I don't have an issue with women priests in the C of E. But for some reason I can't explain I would hate it in the RC church.

MockerstheFeManist · 11/04/2019 18:29

Would a woman come up with shit like this?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47898562

(All those babies left in a septic tank in Ireland, it was to stop them growing up permissive. All becomes clear.)

BentCoppers · 11/04/2019 19:45

Toddler how is it terrible? I don’t actually know much about what an archbishop does.

x2boys · 11/04/2019 20:02

Well.I'm(lapsed) Catholic so that might help ? Seems a bit of a faff tbh the whole choosing of the pope and white smoke etc.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/04/2019 22:42

@BentCoppers very very hard work. No days off. Massive levels of stress. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

AirBiscuit · 11/04/2019 23:08

I'm not an alcoholic paedophile so I am under-qualified

MitziK · 11/04/2019 23:23

If I believed, I'm not convinced I would be good enough to be responsible for 1.2 billion human souls that put their trust in me, never mind the others I'd feel needed to be given that same 'gift'.

But if I could convince them to care for the environment and not destroy the world and wildlife that, according to that faith, humans have ultimate responsibility for - and their God is actually bothered about, as per even caring about a single sparrow? Maybe.

MitziK · 11/04/2019 23:28

Just adding that any puffs of fumata bianca would be me having a crafty fag round the back of the Sistine Chapel...

BentCoppers · 12/04/2019 12:06

Thanks Toddler for the info. I had no idea!
